Mysterious group of greedy ants

avatar

Today morning I was sitting in my garden observing the nature. I do this now and then to relax my mind. Today while I was observing the nature, I saw this group of ants that were working really hard on something. I was curious to take a closer look. It was almost like a group of 50 to 1000 ants. I always admire ants for their mysterious life. I have observed their lifestyle from a very young age. The way they lead their life is still a mystery to the researchers.

So, today I saw a group of ants travelling from one place to another. I usually pay attention to such groups to observe what they are up to. When I do so, I get to know something interesting. When you always see a group of ants, it will either be to gather some food or to migrate from one place to another. But this time it was for food. I was looking around to see where they found their food. But I couldn't find any traces of food anywhere. I was still observing.

There were actually two groups of ants. One was the black one and another was the red one. Though the red ants were not high in numbers, they were also looking for something seriously. That is when I saw the black ants coming out of this whole kind of thing from the surface.

Wow, they were huge in numbers and they emerged out of the mud hole with a small earthworm. I was so surprised to see how they are hunting. They went all the way deep inside the soil to bring an earthworm out of the hole so that they can have their meal. From what I have observed, black ants are usually very soft in nature. They don't hurt humans. Even if a black ant climbs on our body, we can stay calm because they don't bite. I was thinking that they were nice creatures compared to red ants. But today after seeing this, I actually felt that nature cannot be easily understood.

So, the black ants pulled out an earthworm from the hole and took to their hole. I did not stop there, I was following them to their hole. The journey was pretty long. I saw a group holding the earthworm and a group directing them towards the hole. The distance was huge. They had to climb walls upstairs to reach their hole. They were so dedicated and I saw so much of hard working signs in them. And the group of ants also did not change during the journey. It was the same set of ants who took the food till their ant hole.

I'm sure they do this as one big project because they plan properly and they bring some bigger ants along with them and some group of ants for directions and some to just follow the path after the target is taken. If you try to do one small disturbance to this by taking away the earthworm or something, they will all disperse and disappear.

Wow, what an amazing morning it was. I felt really motivating after observing this. Hard work and planning is something that we have to definitely learn from these species. And I'm really proud to live in this environment.

Kind of sad, I suppose for the worm. Colony insects are interesting as they do perform their jobs well and all for the good of the colony. Interesting post; thanks for sharing.

Yes it is pretty sad for the ants. I did not expect ants would do such a hunting. It was a surprise for me as well. Thanks for the comments.
