Portfolios: 'Lost Angels' by Lee Jeffries, the dignification of the homeless.

Something that characterizes me is that I always look for original, unique things to enjoy, and there is so much to see on the web, so much to discover, that I really enjoy exploring and getting to know the work of artists from all over the world.

Many times what I find surprises me, it challenges me, it excites me, but rarely do I find jobs that touch me to such an extent that they hurt me, that they question me on a personal level, that almost spit me in the face. Lost Angels by Lee Jeffries has accomplished that. It is a fairly extensive and constantly growing collection of photographs taken of homeless people from all the places Jeffries has visited, starting with his native England..

After reviewing his page in Facebook, and his accounts in Flickr and 500px, he has sincerely left me goosebumps. His images express so much that you have to be really insensitive to not react to them. There is an emotional charge so strong in each image that it sometimes hurts to look at them. Only God knows the stories, pains, sorrows and experiences that could be behind those faces that he shows us in each photograph. And despite this, almost all of them convey a dignity and courage that many of us would like to have.

Something interesting about Jeffries' work is that he takes these photos with the consent of the portrayed. Talk to them, explain their work and the purpose of the photographs, establish a link, an emotional connection with them, and then take the photo. According to Jeffries himself comments, after doing this more than 50% of them agree.

Like many photographers, he is a self-taught, and he started the ‘Lost Angels’ series due to fates of fate. One day while doing another job, he ran into a homeless girl across the street and took a picture. Faced with her claims, he approached embarrassed to apologize, sat next to her and stayed chatting for hours. This experience gave birth to this series of photographs and the process to take them.

Have you ever wondered what it means to be a homeless? I have not been able to avoid asking myself that question when I saw these images and read about the work of this photographer, and in thinking about it I could not help but reassess what I am and what I have. Sometimes we are more fortunate than we realize ... maybe it is time to follow the example of Lee Jeffries and start looking at the invisible, those who populate our day to day and we ignore, one never knows, life gives many laps, and one of them can put us in front of Jeffries' lens ... let's think about it for a moment.
