Just a quickie today to get rid of some of the backlog despite football tonight. The photos are from one of the few relatively sunny days recently. (Although I must admit, this week it's better.) Because it was quite sunny, I thought the sunset could be nice.Heute nur ein Quickie, um den Rückstand trotz Bundesliga nicht zu groß werden zu lassen. Die Bilder stammen von einem der wenigen relativ sonnigen Tage in letzter Zeit (obwohl zugegebenermaßen die aktuelle Woche besser ist). Da es recht sonnig war, dachte ich, der Sonnenuntergang könnte recht schön werden.

Well, it wasn't. This was due to the clouds on the horizon behind which the sun disappeared right before it went down. But I got some nice shots, anyway.Nunja, er war's nicht. Das lag an den dichten Wolken am Horizont, hinter denen die Sonne verschwand. Konnte trotzdem ein paar nette Fotos machen.

Before the sun disappeared completely, there was at least a little light show with the thinner clouds. Nothing spectacular, but nice.Bevor die Wolken die Sonne komplett verdeckten, gab es immerhin eine kleine Lichtershow. Nicht toll, aber doch nett.

The Paliovouna on the north coast of the Gulf of Patras often attracts clouds at its top. Which can make for nice pictures even if the sunset colours are only faint. The reflection in the fairly quiet waters of the day gave it a special little touch.Der Paliovouna an der Nordküste des Golfs von Patras hat oft Wolken um seinen Gipfel. Was schonmal schöne Bilder ergeben kann, auch wenn die Farben des Sonnenuntergangs mal nicht so ausgeprägt sind. Die Reflexion im recht ruhigen Wasser an dem Tag gibt dem Ganzen eine spezielle Note.

As you may know by now, I like Patras a lot. Beside the high prices here in Greece, there is one major point of discontent. In winter the pollution is just horrible:Wie inzwischen bekannt sein dürfte, gefällt mir Patras sehr. Neben den hohen Preisen hier in Griechenland gibt es aber einen weiteren unangenehmen Aspekt. Im Winter ist die Luftverschmutzung einfach grausig:

What you see in the above photo is not smog, but smoke. The reason for this is the fact that many people here still use coal or wood to heat their homes. The situation very much reminds me of my time in Siping in North China. It was little bit worse there, though, because you could actually taste the smoke in your mouth.Was man oben sieht, ist kein Smog, sondern Rauch. Der Grund liegt darin, daß hier immer noch viele Leute mit Kohle oder Holz heizen. Das erinnert mich gewaltig an meine Zeit in Siping, in Nordchina. Da war es allerdings noch ein klein bißchen schlimmer, da man den Rauch tatsächlich im Mund schmecken konnte.

The situation for me is particularly bad because my neighbours do it & their chimney is just a few metres from my bedroom. But it's not only the heating which pollutes the air. Some people obviously also burn waste. I suppose, it's harvest waste, but I can't be sure.Für mich ist es v.a. deswegen schlimm, weil meine Nachbarn auch mit Kohle heizen & deren Schornstein nur ein paar Meter von meinem Schlafzimmer entfernt ist. Es ist aber nicht nur das Heizen, das die Luft verschmutzt. Offenbar verbrennen manche Leute hier auch Abfall. Ich nehme an, daß es sich um Ernteabfälle handelte, aber sicher bin ich nicht.

In the next view down south along the coast, you can see the smoke better. & there is obviously an even bigger fire behind some mountains. The smoke was pretty stationary, because on that day there was virtually no wind.In der nächsten Ansicht entlang der Küste nach Süden sieht man den Rauch noch besser. & anscheinend gab es hinter den Bergen noch ein größeres Feuer. Der Rauch wurde nicht weggeweht, da es an dem Tag fast völlig windstill war.

Even with the smoke, the landscape around the town can give you some nice impressions. Although I can't necessarily recommend to come here in winter. If you want to visit Patras in winter, anyway, you should go when the weather forecast predicts some windy days.Auch mit dem Rauch ist die Landschaft um Patras angenehm zu sehen. Auch wenn ich nicht unbedingt empfehlen kann, im Winter herzukommen. Wer es trotzdem wagen will, der sollte es nur tun, wenn der Wetterbericht einige windige Tage vorhersagt.

Out on the sea at least, there was not much smoke. & because there was no wind, the water was very quiet, too. So, the coast guard had an easy time speeding around.Auf hoher See gab es immerhin kaum Rauch. & wegen des fehlenden Windes war auch das Wasser sehr ruhig. Also war es für die Küstenwache recht einfach, mal wieder durch die Gegend zu rasen.

Angling with a small boat far out was made easy as well. The fishermen seemed to have found some bigger shoal of fish, judging from the seagulls in the air around them.Das Angeln von kleinen Booten aus war auch angenehmer als sonst. Die Angler auf diesem Bild schienen einen größeren Fischschwarm gefunden zu haben, nach der Anzahl der Seemöwen um sie herum zu schließen.

After the sun went down, the cloud formations provided some nice structure for the light. Sadly, it doesn't look quite as good on the photos as in reality.Nachdem die Sonne untergegangen war, ergaben die Wolken noch ein bißchen Struktur für das Licht. Leider kommt das auf den Fotos nicht so gut raus wie in der Realität.
