VISIT PORTUGAL_ Leça da Palmeira (Chapel in Beach Boa Nova)

avatar

5 minutes from Porto airport is Leça da Palmeira, for many people consider it the most beautiful land in Portugal, in fact it is a very beautiful land with a lot to visit. This is whoever has a flight and wants to go earlier this can be a very good going before the flight if you arrive earlier than the scheduled.
It is a land with an incredible avenue with many tourist and historical points to visit.
Today I will talk a little about this land and its monuments.
The land belongs to the district of Porto inserted in the city of Matosinhos.
Unfortunately we don't have a metro in those areas and the only way to get there is by car or bus.

Today I bring you one of the main icons of the Local (chapel Boa nova )

This chapel was erected in the 14th century, in 1392, although it is almost certain that there was already another temple, dedicated to S. Clemente das Penhas.
Even today, the Boa Nova area is somewhat harsh, with a strong wind during most days and a rough sea during the winter months. In the 14th century, according to reports at the time, it would be the same, adding the fact that the surrounding land is sterile, making the living conditions of the monks difficult. It may seem strange to most people that the monks chose this area for the construction of their monastery, but if we take into account the vows that the Franciscans make (poverty, chastity and obedience) it becomes evident that this place will not have been chosen by chance. Vows imply survival with what is strictly necessary, leaving aside everything that is superfluous, appealing to penance. At the same time, it allowed the view of the sea and the cliffs, leading to the contemplation of God's creative work.
In 1475 they moved to the Convent of Nossa Senhora da Conceição (now Quinta da Conceição) and the monastery was gradually demolished, leaving only the chapel and two annexes.

The Chapel of Boa Nova has a single nave, with an altarpiece in a Joanine style, with four columns and three niches, each with an image. In the middle we have the image of Senhora da Boa Hora, made in polychrome wood and to which the relatives of the navigators turn mainly to ask for her return. On each side we have S. João Batista, also in polychrome wood and S. Clemente, image in polychrome dwarf stone.

It is a place to visit, both by the leceiros and by those who visit us, because as in the past, it continues to facilitate contemplation and calm the soul.
