A winter blooming cactus - Mammillaria Bombycina

avatar

It is middle of the winter here. And even though we do not get snow or frosts (very rarely) it does gets cold. Especially at night the temperature can drop to just a few degrees. I still keep all my cacti outside on the fresh air to they do get that cold nights. And that is good - that is what they need to get good winter rest. The cold will also induce the buds forming for the next season.

But why this one is blooming now? She was blooming in the regular time in summer too. She started to open the flowers a few weeks back. Very slowly, one by one. In summer it created a nice floral wrath around and this is how they usually bloom. Even few layers of flowers that will open one by one lasting for weeks.

I see there are more buds showing, so the flowers will stay for a while.
See how they are all protected by the long spines ended up with very sharp hooks and smaller, gentler white ones? Proper bud protection!

And more spines are coming up.
I start to think she never goes for winter rest.

I hope it will start producing offshoots soon. When it starts growing almost like a bush with many plants next each other and they all start to bloom... it looks just amazing. Hope you are tempted to google the name and see for yourself.
Cacti are so cool!

Oh WOW you got some great shots of those flowers. What's cool is that the macro frames really show how delicate and lace like those petals are. I have a (quite larger - over 8ft tall) cactus that bloomed one flower several years ago. pure white and it bloomed in the middle of the night. I got up to see it before it wilted away. Soooo Beautiful. Never bloomed again. This small guy you have here is absolutely fantastic. Great color. Sort of calming and peaceful even though those sharp thorns are waiting to get me if I dare touch! hehe. Have a great rest of your day @ewkaw :-)

Thanks for sharing these!

Oh my! Those columnar cacti are harder to bloom I think. Also some need many many years to mature and be even ready to bloom! I have a few too, but never bloomed. Not as tall as yours though! I can imagine how gorgeous the flower must have been.

You can dare to touch, but be ready to be hooked :P

hehe.. so true! We had the cactus for about 10 years when it finally bloomed. Inherited from my aunt. She had it for probably 25 years or so before me! Never bloomed for her. Guess it like the room it was in. BEAUTIFUL FLOWER!!! I may do a post on it, but who knows when I'll get around to it, so i'll share a few pic's below...

Yes, I will expose, it is necessary that my son transfer photos and videos from the tablet to the computer.
On an old computer, I could do it myself, on a new one - my son does it.
