The journey to small

avatar
(Edited)

Some time ago I wrote about a new journey I was embarking on; It's a small journey, or should I say, the journey to small?

Around three months ago I purchased a new camera lens, the first of its kind for me, namely, a macro lens. I was pretty excited...But had to quell the excitement for a time as I was unable to pay for it in full so ended up leaving it at the camera shop and paid it off as funds permitted. Today I braved the virus pandemic and headed into the city [holding my breath the whole way - some 45 minutes] and paid off the final instalment. It was pleasing because I had paid for the lens by going without other things over that three months and genuinely saving the money for it. src

As I walked back to my car, [still holding my breath to avoid the coronavirus contagion] I began to contemplate the creative possibilities of my new lens.

I'm not a good photographer; I'm not just being modest here, I'm just not good at it. I use the point, shoot and hope approach which delivers mixed results and nothing that anyone with any technical ability would cool great. I'm happy with [some of] it though, and that's what counts I suppose.

I'm really quite keen to try it out and, once home from work today, will rock it on my Olympus OM-D E-M10 MkIII.

The lens I got is the Olympus M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 60mm F2.8 Macro which is apparently quite reasonable for macro shooting although I had a few people poo poo my purchase suggesting there are much better lenses. Yes, probably but I can't afford those lenses, am not a professional and so do not want them.

Anyway, I'm going to be macro-ing all weekend I think, just trying it out and seeing what results it [and I] can produce. I'm sure many most of my snaps will be complete crap but I'm also pretty sure I'll enjoy the journey towards my ultimate goal...An average macro shot. That's about the best quality-level I can hope for; Average.

I hope all of y'all have a great weekend. I'm planning to take a break from all the virus-chatter going on as it's starting to sap my energy. The Formula One Grand Prix is on in Melbourne too, so [provided it still happens] I'll be watching that and shooting stuff in close up.

Rock out a good weekend y'all.

EDIT 30 minutes after posting: It seems like my weekend is partially ruined as the Australian Formula One Grand Prix has been cancelled. Thanks coronavirus, you asshole.

Yeah, I mean we're probably not at any great risk but possibly wise to be cautious. Damned coronavirus...I'm over it mate.

Holding your breath for periods of time to get the lense make it super special not to mention the cost. I suppose you are not prepped for masks yet?
Enjoy your journey macro-ing , and if that photo above is yours, then, my goodness, it is an excellent capture, and will say that you are underestimating your photography skills!
Have a lively evening, and take care 🥰🌺🤙

I was a little out of breath after holding it for 45 minutes, but I managed it...And I think avoided the coronavirus. Time will tell. There's no masks here by the way, none available. Aussies are pretty rugged though, and are we are all good at holding our breath...Lol.

Perfect time to go in nature and take cool macro pics :)

Yes you're right and with no F1GP I'll do so. I'm a bit annoyed though as I'm a bit fanatical about my F1 passion. Stupid coronavirus.

Good gear helps (quite a lot) but it won't make a good result by itself ;D Have fun with your macro-ing! If you're doing flowers like your example image you may need to hold it still as I found breezes were always my undoing with stuff like that XD

I'm going to start easy with inanimate objects I think...They stay still usually. I'll just play around for a few days and see what happens.

Hope things are well with you. May you enjoy much happiness, and many days of toilet paper! Lol.

Have fun with the lens. I think it is pretty decent as far as the quality to price ration goes :)

I hope to...Fun is a little bit thin on the ground at the moment so hopefully my new lens turns that around.

Its a lovely camera but I am curious on how you we're able to hold your breath that long because I read tour reply where you said almost 45 minutes. I can't hold mine for two minutes. Thats really amazing.

I have really big lungs.

Actually...It's called a joke. You obviously didn't read it that way though.

😂😂😂 I definitely didn't read it that way. Now I understand you.

I put stupid stuff like that in sometimes, just to see who reads all the way through. If someone coments on it then I know they read, or skimmed, that far at least. Besides, why not? The world is too serious already.

Reminds me of my Olympus C-765 which I bought long back. Right now, its just lying in a corner, because the battery is gone. Could not find a suitable battery replacement and instead have now decided to just use the Mobile for all photographs.

I'm looking forward to trying out the lens. I'm going to have to get a small tripod I think, but will just snap away for now and see what happens.

Yes, I am more than fed up with virus hysteria too.

We can drink beer until our blood can power a lawnmower. We can smoke until our lungs become jerky. You can even terminate an unborn fetus up until the day of its birthday. Let's not mention all the people who use the bathroom and don't bother to wash their hands on a regular basis. A pedophile can get away with touching a small child in all sorts of places so long as they are powerful enough to create fear in their victims.

When the flu is at large, suddenly the whole world is scolded for bad hygiene because we touch everything anyway. Will people be happy they didn't spread the flu after the stock markets destroy the economy due to our panic counter-measures?

At least you went ahead with life and got the lens you worked hard for. I too plan to enjoy life through this messy affair as if nothing has changed my lifestyle. Honestly, I cannot go anywhere in public without running into conversations about covid fears. I am dreading going to work and finding out they may plan to close until the pandemic is over (when the hell will that be?).

Perhaps I can come up ahead by buying more bitcoin during this market dip.

Don’t forget obesity, heart disease and cancer.

PS I just bought a lens too.

I could not have said this any better than you have! So...I'm going to simply concur!

It's just ridiculous and I'm totally over it. There's so many unknowns and with the greater implications from a financial perspective it's an issue that will endure for some time to come. My opinion? Many more will go bankrupt than actually die from this debacle.

I think it would be smart to grab some BTC, and other investments, when it's down like this...I mean, that's what the financial titans do which is why they make more millions and billions in these situations. I grabbed some gold and silver myself recently. Picking it up Monday.

I wonder if I should have done that today instead of paying off my lens...Get BTC I mean. But I feel like I need to life right now and will enjoy getting close up with my camera this weekend.

I wish you all the best at this time. Thanks for your great comment.

Funny you mentioned your new lens, I too have bought a lens. But I have gone the opposite way with a 135mm f2.0 ZOOM lens.

Look forward to seeing your photos

Do you have a specific purpose for your lens?

Yeah I do, as a prime lens with a big aperture, that makes it very fast to focus and fantastic in low light.

It is also fixed at 135mm focal length so the compression (think close background) is unmatched

Uses are portraits, wildlife and sports action type shots.

Small downside is I have to a long way from my subject to get them all in my frame (tell that to a colorful wren perched in a tree)

PS. good question you got me talking.

That's some lofty goals there sir galenkp, shooting for average. lol. I get it though, people spend years honing their photography skills. I am confident that at least some of the shots will turn out better than average though!

Possibly...If not I'm not too concerned as there's nothing really riding on it. Whatever happens will happen.
