Krampus 2019

The Krampus has become modern.

Der Krampus ist modern geworden.

Today, most of the Perchts or Krampusses look more like the creatures from Lord of the Rings or other fantasy stories and movies: there are trolls, dwarves and orcs. A Krampus run or Procession looks more like a fantasy convention to me.

The kids that stood in front of me were not a bit afraid of the fearsome horror characters.

I have no idea why the costumes or the masks of the Krampusses have changed so much. Perhaps to appeal more to youth by carving an Orcs mask instead of the Devils mask.

Much has changed to the Krampus or Perchten run (Krampus procession) since I was a child, which are currently happening in many places and towns in the Alpine region.

Many changes and restrictions were certainly necessary because of all the property damages, in which even cars were overturned, and serious injuries and also rapes that happened.
Alcohol has played a large, if not the main role as well for the spectators as also for the Krampusses.

At least at larger events, the Krampusses are therefore separated by barriers from the many spectators and the motto is "alcohol-free and child-friendly". In the larger towns and cities, where the police are responsible for law and order, that is the case, but in some areas, of course, there are still fights and injuries every once in a while.

That the Krampusse are kid-friendly, you see again and again.

To be honest, as beautiful ugly as some of these modern masks are made, I like the "old" masks better and if we should go to see another Krampus parade, I would like to go somewhere, where they also have the old traditional masks.

Krampus, the anti Santa Claus?

0

avatar

Oh no, you mean that horror movie @markkujantunen 😉
Our Krampus is a very old historic figure that comes together with Nikolaus - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krampus

Krampus
In Central European folklore, Krampus is a horned, anthropomorphic figure described as "half-goat, half-demon", who, during the Christmas season, punishes children who have misbehaved, in contrast with Saint Nicholas, who rewards the well-behaved with gifts. Krampus is one of the companions of Saint Nicholas in several regions including Austria, Bavaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Northern Italy including South Tyrol and the Province of Trento, Slovakia, and Slovenia. The origin of the figure is unclear; some folklorists and anthropologists have postulated it as having pre-Christian origins.
In traditional parades and in such events as the Krampuslauf (English: Krampus run), young men dressed as Krampus participate; such events occur annually in most Alpine towns.

But he is the anti Santa in the sense that he does the punishing whereas Santa gives the gifts.
Krampus is the bad cop and Santa is the good one.

Yes, you are completely right, of course, but when you mentioned it in your comment I thought you meant that !DERANGED movie a few years ago ;)

Oh, Santa goes door to door in Austria, too? Here it's just Santa. He comes at Christmas Eve early in the evening. Strangely, no kid ever questions the fact that Santa is able to visit all the kids at the same time ...

Here the Nikolaus (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Nicholas) goes from door to door on December 5th or 6th and brings small presents. He tells the children what they have done wrong (their parents told him before, of course). The Krampus accompanies him (for the bad children ;).

On December 24 comes the Christkind with presents (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christkind). We don't have the Santa Claus, because it would be much to much work for him to visit the children in Austria at the same time too ;) lol

I know Krampus was never a pretty boy but, they have gone overboard on him! I prefer the old masks and isn't it a shame a few bad apples have given this fun event a bad name?

Although I have to admit, some of those costumes are quite imaginative. :)

Great shots, Johann!

Even though there was more violence, as far as I remember there was also more fun then. Nowadays they walk between the fences and that was quite it. There's not much interaction with the people, because they are not allowed to do more than present theirself and scare the youth a little bit 😉
I also wish the old masks would come back, and I whish there were no fences, but the rule of "no alcohol" is good 👍

Thank you so much for your kind comment and for the !tip Denise 🙂

In Romania exists a similar ancient tradition in winter to chase away bad spirits.

"Masks are the members of a group of haters, disguised and masked as they walk from house to house, singing, reciting, playing and playing host to the New Year.

The dance of the masks has pre-Christian origins, when it had ritual functions and represents the struggle between good and evil.

The masks are made of canvas, fur and animal skins, wood, horns and are adorned with multicolored ribbons, colored glass pieces, mirrors. In Ruginoasa, Iasi county, the masks are thickly lined to withstand the blows in the traditional Battle of Ruginoasa."-source Wikipedia

Yeah, I have began to post in German and English about a year ago and now I cannot stop it 😉

I don't post on twitter regularly, but I gave it a try and have added to add the #steem / #steemit tags in my latest post today and have added the #oc and #posh tags to my latest Steemit post. The only problem I see for me, is the number of tags you may use in your posts ;)

Thanks a lot again 🙂

Danke für deinen sehr interessanten Bericht.
Finden alle Krampusumzüge um den
5.12. (Krampustag) und 6. Dezember (Nikolausfest) statt?

The variety and creativity of those masks is astounding sir johannpiber! What is the difference between the old style and the new style though? A professional blogger would show us the difference.

They have these fairs or whatever you call them just at Christmas time?

0
0
0.000
avatar

When I was young the masks habe been much better - there is not much creativity at these masks - most are made from movies like Lord of the Rings.
Of course I could show you the difference, but unfortunately when I was young I didn't have a camera :( ... but I have added Wikipedia links though ;)

The Krampusses run from mid/end of November till 6th of December.

Last year I have made a post with photos I have made quite a few years ago, where the masks have been better in my opinion: https://steemit.com/photography/@johannpiber/krampus-day-who-is-afraid

Some traditions should stay as they have always been, just like respect and honor, but these are non existant anymore. Most kids don't even know what that is, and it's not their fault, it's the fault of their !DERANGED parents...

That sounds like here. What is wrong with the parents today? It has to go back to THEIR parents and how they were raised. SOMEONE stopped doing a good job of raising their kids somewhere along the line.
And the public schools here do a lousy job so they don't help any.

The teachers are no respected persons anymore, although they would like to be respected and the kids learn at home that they can do anything they want and that they don't need to respect the older.
That's so sad, because my mum tought me to greet - do you know children who greet you on the street? I do - on th ecountryside, where my partents live the kids still greet when they meet you on the street.

Wow. No, no one greets you on the street here. Unless they know you.

In the cities it is the same, but in the small villages on the countryside everybody greets everyone, never mind if they know you.

That is what it was like in the country when I lived in Kansas. I live in the country now but they aren't as friendly in Texas.

There are areas here, where the people are very friendly, but only to their people. If you come and visit someone, they might not even look at you, unless they know you, or they wait until you greet them friendly ;)

But in general the people on the countryside are more respectful and friendly, that's for sure.

Yes, the same here in most states. At least in the South. I will just hang out with you when I get over there. If someone doesn't like me they'll have to go through you first. lol.

When we are where I have grown up you won't have problems - the people there tolerate me, why not you or anybody else? ;) lol

No, the people here are used of these masks, and if you haven't been bad all year long, they won't harm you at all, because they are nice guys all in all 😉
Thanks a lot for your nice comment @cloudblade 😊

Haha,
They are good people,
This is also a meaningful activity.
I'm not used to those looks,
Will be afraid,
Nightmares while sleeping at night.
