Been there! I miss Albania so much. I lived in Tirana for several months about 4-5 years ago. I arrived just as Albania, the EU and the DEA organized to destroy Lazarat, the renegade ganja growing town near Gjirokaster run by Grandmas with AK-47s. They regained control of Lazarat just as I was arriving at the airport, so needless to say the turban-wearing Rasta from abroad was suspected of having ties to Lazarat, and I was held for a few hours at the airport.
However, the staff were super friendly as they searched all my belongings, uncovering Albanian study books and normal items a traveler should have. Their mood turned when they saw my study books, and we were able to converse a bit in Albanian. Impressed I studied the language 6 months before coming, they sent me on my way with smiles and friendly handshakes. The one place I regret never having the funds or time to see was Butrint.
