Autumn Album # 2: Labyrinths
Jorge Luis Borges spoke of the labyrinths of memory, which is where we would probably have to descend to find the origin of this mysterious symbol, which for innumerable past cultures was as significant and important as the cross for Christians and the crescent for Muslims.
The classical texts, and especially Pliny, cited up to five monumental labyrinths, which Time, History and especially human barbarism destroyed: that of Lake Moeris, in Egypt; Cnossos and Gortyna, in Crete; another Greek, on the island of Lemnos and the Etruscan labyrinth of Clusium.
It was also a symbol inherited by medieval stonecutters and figure, in different ways and in different places, in churches and cathedrals throughout Europe, being, perhaps, the most relevant, the one found in the nave of the mythical French cathedral of Chartres .
For scholars like Waldemar Fenn, the Galician petroglyphs of Mogor, in Pontevedra, would be a representation of the apparent movement of the stars.
What comes to confirm, at least, in part, the old sentence of the mythical Hermes Trismegisto, that what is above is equal to what is below.
And in its labyrinthine journey, it is no less true, that the pilgrim who runs Compostela does it following the Way of the Milky Way or Way of the Stars.
I quote Borges again and his recommendation to look for the labyrinths of memory.
