LABASERO or FISH VENDOR

Different countries has different cultures. It will be fascinating or it will be just disturbing. We have different judgement or insight but we need to respect. That's part of their culture that we have nothing to do with it. It may new to you but to others it's not. Especially if that culture is being part of their daily to survive in this world.

Labasero is an bisayan word from the Visayas region in the Philippines. Philippines use too many dialects that sometimes you'll think it's not from here. Back to "labasero", in english word you can call them fish vendor. Labasero is different from fish vendor you can see in different market here in the Philippines.

There are many vendor's like here in the Philippines. Some of them has no permit to do business but still can be found in the street selling. Well, of course other's doesn't know how to earn money or they thought they couldn't work in a certain job. There are other vendors run and then hide when they'll see government personnel to arrest them by selling with no permit.

However, labasero is different from it. You may think they have no permit because they keep on moving in different locations as long as it's around in the town. They have permission from the barangay or government council. They're paying every month for such an amount in order for them to sell fish with permission from the government.

You can find most of them in the province where there are no huge market. If there is no huge market, only few people will come in that market to buy fish. The fish vendor is not oblige to sell only in that market if it's just too small. Not too many people or customers to come because some goods you want to buy can't be found there. But it will only possible when the Mayor in town strictly prohibits vendors not to sell goods in the market.

It will be easier for them to find. Sometimes they're riding on a bicycle or sometimes in a motorcycle. Together with their vehicles there will be a foam where their fish inside with an ice to make the freshness of the fish will preserve. If you don't see them around, don't worry they'll create a blowing sound like a megaphone. They'll create a sound by blowing the shell. The seashell has no inside of it, so when they'll blow it will create a sound. That's the sign that "labasero" is coming.

Focus in watching the inage and if you'll see that shell at the top of foam. That's what I'm talking about that it will create a sound so that people will know they're coming..

Of course they will also bring a measurement scale. The purpose of this is to measure how much kg. you would like to buy. Sometimes you can get discounts if you'll buy too many. But you should be observant as well because sometimes they'll sell fish that is not fresh anymore. It just look's like fresh because they placed the fish for many hours already.

Remember that "labasero" is not fisherman. You'll expect that their price from the fisherman is a bit higher. Although it's not expensive but knowing they'll add amount half of the price from what the fisherman sold it to them. But if you're not feeling well to wait a fisherman to come home from the ocean and buy. It's fine to buy in "labasero", since they're the one who will approach you to buy from them.

Is this new to you or you have this kind of vendor as well? You can comment down and let me learn something new from you. Every words in the comment section will be appreciated.

I imagine this works on the fact that the shoppers know which vendors run a good business with the freshest fish, and those who don't. I guess it might also be more dangerous to buy from the vendors without permits if you want fresh fish; is that right?

Interesting post!

nope, it's not dangerous because most of the fish vendors sell fresh fish and also most of the vendors that are selling are the people we knew.

thank you

Interesting post. That's a great way to be able to get fresh fish out to small, local populations that wouldn't be served by a market. Really neat!

We are lucky here at the coast, as we can buy fresh from the fishing boats as they come into the harbor.
But of course we also have fish sellers here that ply their sales in other areas.

yeah, the same in my place. We are also lucky to buy fresh fish but sometimes the fishermen caught small amount of fish so that we couldn't buy from them sometimes.

Oh yeah, we also have a problem when the catches are small.

I enjoyed learning about the fish markets where you live, @mrnightmare. We sometimes have people selling fish that way, or more often shrimp. But mostly people buy their seafood from a grocery store.

Hello @mnightmare89. Thanks for sharing the ways street vendors sell fish in your province. I have a question. If the vendor is not wearing any gloves on his hands while handling the fish, how can you know that you are not receiving any germs or bacteria from handling the fish, interacting with the customers their exchange of money?

There is a lot I see that would prevent me from purchasing any type of seafood or otherwise from a street vendor.

well I understand you for that because we're talking about our health. To answer that question, there is no assurance because the person didn't wear gloves.

But for us it's fine, we will going to clean it after all before cooking.
