Do people talk to each other nowadays?

Interesting comments made me think of the experience I had in my life.
A few years ago, my husband and I went to my aunt's house for inviting her family to our son's 'upanayanam'. It is a thread ceremony where the male child is initiated into the Brahmacharya phase as per Hindu rituals.
Well, we were invited into the house and my aunt sat with us while the daughter in law went to the kitchen to bring us refreshments. The climate was hot and we were thankful for the cool juice she brought us.
The television set was on and my aunt was trying to watch her favorite soap as well as trying to talk to us. In the end, she just ignored us and started talking to her daughter in law about the story. This irritated my husband and he got up and told us that we should leave immediately. I too did not want to prolong the awkward visit and we handed her the official invitation letter to my aunt who was completely oblivious to the fact that she had not been very cordial. She accepted it and we walked out, glad to be away from people who did not have the courtesy to talk to guests and watch the television instead.
People have become even more addicted now what with whatsapp groups and chats and so on. It would be rare to see people actually talking together in a family gathering i.e. if those are still held.
It is high time people became serious about how to get rid of this addiction to mobiles.
