Fat Elvis in Chiang Mai - a wonderful and cheap place for "American" food

(Edited)

American is in quotes above because many of the dishes are prepared in other countries as well. Other than the buffalo wings I don't think USA can really claim a majority of the menu - but it certainly does seem "like home" to this American.

The place doesn't look like much from the street. In fact, it doesn't really even look like a restaurant and instead just appears to be exactly the same as all the other restaurants that are located up and down the "Zoe Yellow" street. However, they had a sign out front that would catch any American carnivore's eye.

I've been duped by promises of "fall off the bone" ribs in Asia before, so based on this past experience and the fact that their dining room wasn't exactly world-class, I had doubts that this would be any good, especially for the mere $6 that was being charged for a full rack.

My photo doesn't look as good as the advert but that has a lot to do with the lack of photochops and that I am using a rather old smartphone. However, they truly were fall-off-the-bone awesome.

We also ordered some buffalo wings because me and my friends are pigs.

I used to own a restaurant that specialized in precisely this item so I presumed I wouldn't like them but I'll be dammed, they were spot on! The Ranch dressing was even genuine Ranch dressing and that is not an easy thing to pull off in Thailand.

Don't let the rather lackluster interior of this place turn you off because I nearly allowed it to and learned that you really shouldn't judge a book by its cover in Chiang Mai.

This place was phenomenal and given the rather difficult nature of sourcing the materials necessary to create these items, I can't believe how low the prices were. You can expect to spend about $10 a person for a massive feed... well, until you include alcohol and since I drink a lot of beer, this more than doubled my bill.

If you are traveling in Chiang Mai ever, you will more than likely be staying near this place anyway, and therefore it is one of the most highly recommended restaurants (by me) in the entire city. There are other places here that make "better" western food, but from a cost/benefit perspective, Fat Elvis can't be beat.

While i actually did not submit this to Tasteem because I don't like their "contest" metrics, I suggest that you get involved if you have a restaurant review because other than how their contests winners are determined, it is a great site / app

Ranch dressing, it’s rare as hell in the UK. If I hadn’t lived in the USA I wouldn’t be aware of it.

What’s your gripe with Tasteem? I get on well with them all.

Ranch is awesome although technically it is just mayonnaise, milk, and some spices. I had to import the spice packets because the major manufacturers are pretty secretive about what the packets contain. oh i have no gripe with Tasteem I just don't want to win the contests. I want other people to win them.

See, the fact that you used to own a restaurant, a bar run a guesthouse. I think that is why people think you are older than what you are especially when you don't show the face.

179 a rack! And fell right off the bones. I wantttt though the wings look soggy.

that makes sense to me. Buffalo wings are supposed to be dripping with sauce. If you don't need a mountain of napkins, they didn't do it right :)

Thanks for the 'Fat Elvis' tip for dining out in Chiang Mai...I've been planning to get there eventually (Thailand) and following some ex-pat YouTube videos for about two years now.

179 baht now $8.00 ?!?!? Wasn't long ago when it equaled about $6.00 U.S. or less. I've been hearing about the Thai Baht getting stronger.

Haha... It was an inadvertent 'catch', friend. I thought the Baht had merely jumped up in value against other currencies once again. It does sort of prove that I actually read your post and not just blindly voted upon it though :>)

it does prove that and thanks for pointing it out and also for actually reading it! :)

That does seem like a legit place indeed. I love travelling in Asia and trying to find native food that I would love. After a while of doing that, it would be nice to find a place with the tastes of home as well.

I agree on tasteem. I like the support they give their posters, and the neat platform more than I do the contests. I have a review with lots of sushi to post...maybe today.

Very interesting. I think I have mentioned it before, but my wife and I can pretty much tell how good a place is going to be based on their ranch dressing. There is just a perfect consistency and flavor that we love. That is pretty impressive that they were able to make the ribs fall off the bone. Usually when you bake them in the oven or cook them in a pressure cooker first and then finish them off on the chargrill it gives you that tenderness. It also makes it easier for restaurants to churn out a ton of them. We have a local bar that on certain nights does all you can eat ribs and they are fall off the bone just like this. No tug required. Unless I am at home with family I actually prefer a rib I can eat with a knife and fork. Just makes it easier and less embarrassing!

i'm pretty finicky with my ranch as well. They sell it in bottles here made by some company I've never heard of, it's probably out of China because they really push the fact that it is "AMERICAN!" as if there was any other type of ranch. It is also disgusting. Kinda tastes like that horrible "light" ranch that I remember accidentally buying in the USA and ended up throwing it out.

Yeah, the light ranch is hit or miss. Most of the time it is too sugary and it tastes more like Miracle Whip than anything else. We have started to go the route of low fat stuff just adds more sugar so why not just eat the real stuff in moderation.

since i believe that fat is far less harmful than sugar i will always go FULL fat :)

I must admit I have a weakness for ribs. Place looks decent and the prices are good.

Funny to see this in my feed.... LOL. Last night driving home my daughter started prattling on about Fat Elvis and I had NO IDEA what she was talking about. Turns out she had seen their sign on the back of a tuk tuk in front of us and would like to try "the full rack". And then the next question came, "Mama, what's a Full Rack?" LOL. The joys of living in the cracks between cultures. My Dutch-Aussie self promised to give Fat Elvis a try 'soon".... and here you are!! LOL. A cosmic sign, no less, that mamas need to keep their promises.

i was really impressed with really everything about this place. It is rare that I feel compelled to compliment the chef, but that is exactly what I did before we left this place. Turns out it was just one lady in a small kitchen churning out all this amazing food. It certainly comes highly recommended by me!

I love ribs in this form, when the meat falls off the bone, juicy and well seasoned ....
