The preeminence of love - its value

"If I spoke human and angelic languages, and I have no love, I become like a metal that resounds or a cymbal that rattles."

We are certain that here the "angelic languages" mean eloquence. We have never heard an angel speak, but we think Paul did hear them. It is that the greatest eloquence, without love, means absolutely nothing. Dr. Scroggy put it this way:

"Language without love is like a noise without melody." And Dr. McGee said, "Chattering without charity is like a soulless
noise." You can sing like a seraph, but without love, it would not differ from a hellish sound. Love is what gives meaning, depth and reality, and makes eloquence meaningful, meaningful. Now let's read verse 2:
"And if I had prophecy, and understood all the mysteries and all knowledge, and if I had all the faith, in such a way that I moved the mountains, and I have no love, I am nothing."
The first verse spoke of love as it arises from the heart, and here in verse 2, it arises from the mind, and it is love as an act of the intellect. Knowledge alone is not enough. Love must be added to that knowledge. Intelligence alone is not enough. Love must accompany that intelligence. This is the sad condition some Christians find themselves in today. They have a knowledge of the Bible, an understanding of the truths of the Bible, but they demonstrate a lack of love. Then we see the third point that Paul made in verse 3, which says:
"And if I distributed all my goods to feed the poor, and if I gave my body to be burned, and I have no love, it is useless to me."

This love is an act of the will. In other words, love involves the heart (v.1), the mind (v.2) and the will (v.3). Love is a fruit of the Holy Spirit. Although we must desire the best gifts intensely, they must be exercised, put into practice with love, and only the Spirit of God can achieve it.
Let us look at it this way. You can write a list of zeros. The first zero represents eloquence; the second the prophecy; the third, knowledge; the fourth faith; the fifth the sacrifice; the sixth the martyrdom; all these zeros are still nothing more than zeros. They do not amount to anything. But if you put a number one to the left of that row of zeros, then each of the zeros takes on a value. Dear listener, love is the element that needs to be added to each of the gifts of the Spirit. Without love, a gift is useless, it has no value.
