January 30, 2021--Chorale Prelude on Christ lag in Todesbanden by Georg Phillip Telemann
So, today I downloaded and figured out how to operate OBS (Open Broadcast Software) and spent part of the day playing with it. I ordered a web camera as well, so I can make more Hauptwerk recordings without having to stick my phone in front of the speakers.
Today's recording is another of the wonderful easy Chorale Preludes by Telemann. This one is on the great Easter Hymn "Christ lay in Death's Bands/Dark prison" (depending on translation). If we take the opening line of the chorale, it is a pretty depressing text. However, Telemann sets this as an upbeat dance-tune. The melody is played straight in the right hand, while the left hand provides the dancelike offbeat rhythmic drive to the piece. I think Telemann is taking his cues from later in the text, specifically the 5-7 lines of the chorale:
"Therefore let us joyful be
And praise our God right heartily.
So sing we Hallelujah!"
As you will see in the video, I used the Principal 8' and 2' for the chorale melody. The accompaniment is a Gedackt 8' and Flute 4'.
