Secrets of Organ Playing Contest Week 91 Submission--Gott, durch deine Gute BWV 600 from Orgelbuchlein by J.S. Bach

Continuing with the Little Organ Book, this week I present the second of the preludes in the collection. This is a jaunty little piece in four voice that presents a canon between the upper voice and the tenor voice. Interestingly, however, the tenor voice is placed in the pedals above the walking bass played by the left hand. Meanwhile, in the alto voice, there is an unbroken eighth note motion. Finding a happy balance between the voices took up much of my time this week. In the score, Bach suggests using a principal 8 foot in the manuals and a solo 8 foot reed (trumpet is the recommendation by the composer) in the pedals. I was not content with that sound as the trumpet reed on the organ I was working on was rather loud, even with it being on the swell and the swell box closed. And the walking bass line in the manual was not satisfying. SOOOOO....My solution. I played the right hand (Soprano and Alto voices) on the Choir manual with a Nasonflute 8', Nachthorn 4', and Principal 2'. The left hand I played on the Great using a Quintadena 16' and Bourdon 8'--which I think created a wonderful bouncing bass line. In the pedals, I used the Trumpet 8' with the swell box closed coupled with a Principal 8'. I liked the end result. Let me know what you think of the sound.
