Now let's see, how did one play the organ again? | Secrets of Organ Playing Contest, Week 85

This is my entry for the Secrets of Organ Playing Contest, week 85. I play Bach's (or not Bach's) Prelude and Fugue in g kminor, BWV 558.

Yesterday we returned home from our holidays in France. And as much as I enjoyed our time there, I did miss playing the organ. As any musician can tell you, not playing and practising regularly, is after a few days already noticeable. I was away for nearly three weeks, so I was curious how bad my playing would be after not having played for all that time.

The last thing I played for the holidays was the first of the eight socalled 'small preludes and fugues' by Johann Sebastian Bach. Or actually, not by Johann Sebastian Bach. They were once attributed to him, however nowadays scholars agree they were not composed by Bach. The actual composer is still topic of debate.

I thought it fitting to choose one of the same 8 preludes and fugues to play as the first thing after the holidays. I choose the one in g minor because it is my favorite after the one in C major I played before the holidays and because it is rather slow paced. This one would be more than enough challenge for my sluggish and in still-in-holiday-mood fingers.

Suprisingly, I needed only one recording. Could that be the effect of the holidays? Relaxed enough to not give a damn about any mistake? And consequently hardly making any? If that's the case I should go on holidays more often. And that's not a bad idea actually... :-)

The recording was done with the Hauptwerk software and the sampleset, made by Sonus Paradisi, of the Hinsz organ in the Reformed church in the Midwolda (http://www.sonusparadisi.cz/en/organs/netherlands/midwolda-surround-sample-set.html).

I enjoyed your registrations. I typically play that first movement with a full plenum registration, but will have to reconsider that after hearing your take.

It's a great piece in this respect. You can play it strong (plenum, forte articulation) or mellow like I did here (soft reed, tremulant, soft articulation) and it sounds just as great. Perhaps it would even work with a flute 4.
