I’m not going to write of the pain, disappointment and depression many are suffering from. Not only because I don’t want Arthur to know, but because dwelling on it makes my own misery come alive again. I am also forced to control my pain as Lusalith was totally crushed and I have to be by her and help her find the courage to live. Arthur’s words that appeared on the screens helped the Muyzith and other species, but they also helped sweet Lusalith. Believing once more there is hope in a successful outcome to our search for Arthur, she is in fine fighting spirit again. She decided that becoming god of Freddie was meant to be so that she can be here to help find him. She is now eager to return to her planet so as to tell them of what is to happen - temporarily she is being a bit of a fanatic, but I think all of us are feeling just as strongly, myself included, so I will not be intolerant of such extremes for a while.

This was the first time we’ve returned to our planet with bad news. Robbie guessed and cut the time of our absence short, but still the media had reported the reason for our abrupt departure. The only way we could make everyone feel better was by giving the media his message. It did help, but it also placed the Muyzith in the spotlight and they had to suffer through some chat shows. It will be a long time before these wounds close and only seeing the new Allan healed and looking normal once more and sensing how many millions of people have a chance at living a decent life again has made us feel better about what happened. None of us blame Allan, he did not think it through and realise what we’d think and even if he had, if I were in his position I would have done it anyway.

The leaders of the new to us alternate Earth came with us and once we’d given everyone a day to get over their disappointment, they were presented by Eddie to our world. Robbie insists that only he should go to all the functions they’ve organised, so we’ll let him suffer a few on his own before we demand to be with him.

David has a rotten sense of timing - this time. He asked me to appear on his show with Campbell and Sebura. I know what it means and I’m not looking forward to it.

“To remind everyone, Sebura is an Orati and a Rider, though I understand he has been elected into the governing council of his people. Looking at him in his smart suit, I must admit I find it difficult to imagine him as a warrior of his people. When he first met Samantha, as we’ve seen in the tellings, although she was offending their laws and beliefs, he quickly saw that she was an irresistible force so he allied himself with her in the hope of minimising the damage to his people. Sebura hit our headlines later on when he attacked Mr Campbell and it pleases me to see both of them here with us for a friendly chat.

Mr Campbell, the entire world was stunned when our author asked for you to join forces with Robert and Michael Teller to save Vincent. Your prompt agreement earned you a lot of goodwill from everyone, Cherinians, Ipohin and Normals. Samantha Teller, could we start with a comment from you about the presence of Mr Campbell in Freddie?”

“What is there to say? I did mention at a previous interview that Mr Campbell is a gentleman. He showed himself to not only be a gentleman, but also gallant and brave. Thanks to his presence and assistance, the problem was solved and we have another alternate Earth joining the family of mankind that stretches across so many realities and hopefully they will soon be part of the PLF. I’d like to take this opportunity to publicly thank Arthur Campbell for his assistance and pleasant company.”

David turned to Campbell. “Let’s face it Mr Campbell, you have spent decades warning us about the Teller family, stressing in particular the danger that Samantha and Michael pose to all Normals. How did you really feel, finding yourself forced to keep them company in Freddie?”

“I should remind you that this was not my first visit - and I hope it will not be my last. As hosts they are, to put it mildly, unorthodox, but then it is to be expected since all of Robert Teller’s wives prefer to remain children.

This was the first time we opened to each other and really communicated. Facing problems and trying to solve them jointly taught me a lot about how they think and what they are really like as people. Samantha in particular was an unbelievable surprise. From my first minute in Freddie to my last, she made me feel welcome and refused to hold back from me any information about them. I’m certain our entire planet knows of their eccentric belief about allowing their enemies to know everything about them, but she really took it to extremes. I’m still trying to recover from that fact on its own. That she and Robert were willing to open new gifts and powers within my mind and teach me how to enter and heal minds that have retreated into a coma is, frankly, still unbelievable and I’m trying hard to come to terms with the changes within me. Can you believe it David, they’ve even accepted me as a partner in a new inter-reality business venture!

7582

Does this mean that I’ve returned with my convictions changed and that I will no longer be hostile? I’m sorry to say it is not time for that yet. I hope to avoid acting in a hostile manner, but I must remain critical of them. Whatever they are like as people, however honourable their intentions may be, they are far too powerful for their good - or ours. Someone must remain vigilant to warn them and everyone else when they take the first steps crossing the line towards dictatorship and the stifling of the human spirit - as can happen without evil intent.”

I was puzzled when David insisted on harping on the enmity between Campbell and myself, but by doing so he helped convince the Normals that much has changed. He then talked to Sebura and I was impressed by how quickly he has learnt and matured. He still responds in the direct ways of an Orati rider, but he is far more sophisticated in his understanding of how our world is run. He came across as charming and honest and the results showed that he is much more popular than he was before the show.

David ended the show with an enormous surprise that made me scream and shout from joy. He told us that he has a surprise guest and an African girl of about fourteen entered. It was our re-born Mama Jo. She was much bigger than me since I was there as an eleven year old, but she is also as fat as she used to be and as we danced around each other giving hugs and crying, she sort of swung me around every time she grabbed me. At the end of the show I would not accept any excuse and made her come home with me.

Almost the first thing Jo (who is now Daphne) asked, was whether Bobby is with us. We explained that he does not enjoy being on planet and spends most of his time in Freddie, with an occasional visit to Noelle when there aren’t many Terran Normals visiting. We jumped to Freddie and Empathia and Sheena walked with her to where Bobby was playing with some Akiard kids.

Solomon joined us at the taverna to bring us up to date with all the experiments going on in the Sparkler World (at least I thought so). After a while he casually turned to me. “Samantha, we are not asking, only asking if it would be possible. Could you imagine yourself splitting for the Sparklers to have a Samantha Thinker?”

“Do you want the first answer that comes to me? I don’t think so. Solomon, I’ve never split for anyone but a Robert and Cherine and, apart from our author, will never do so. The question should have been, if the Teller family decided to split to have a Teller Sparkler family, would I join them? Solomon, as we are at this time I doubt it will happen. What makes us a family is that we are prime for each other. If I’ve understood your species, for us to do or be so while being part of the pool that shares among the Sparklers would only disrupt and alter your species. Have I made any presumptions or errors out of ignorance?”

“As the Sparklers are at present, no. As we will be? Samantha, the Sparklers who create bodies and enjoy sex according to the species of the body they use were indiscriminate in the past, the experience itself enough for them. With time we Thinkers have noticed that certain Sparklers are appearing more often with the same partners. It seems to be because they found a certain compatibility that made their sex more pleasant. How long before they evolve into couples? If we have seen the future correctly, then we have reason to be frightened. Sam, whatever else, we must not lose our communal mind or else we’ll no longer be Sparklers and we could even end up splitting into groups. Would we then have wars?”

I was urgently summoned to Freddie by Cherine - this is Robert. We have experienced too many shattering adventures and new ideas and with the pain (both of excitement at thinking we’d found Arthur and then the pain of discovering it had been a false dream) Samantha was more strongly affected than all of us. She hung on until Solomon left (he did not realise that the fact that she did not answer was evidence of her inner world falling apart), and then she withdrew and is now being cared for by Hesina, with only Dommi visiting her there.

There is one thing about Cherinians that makes me really angry. There are too many gossips (it is claimed that it is a result of our empathy, which compels us with a need to share, but I am not convinced). Of course they soon knew that Sam was not well and filled with anxiety for her they jumped to Freddie. Unfortunately a number of them then told Normals. As Michael had almost instantly followed me to Freddie with his family, it was not long before the news was being broadcast by all the media. Sam had agreed to attend a lecture and answer questions from the students, so I had to announce that she will not be attending any functions for a while.

7583

I’ve had to ask all Cherinians to only come to Freddie on a need to come basis. Dommi insisted that even good vibes are too much for Sam to handle. The rumours and then my confirmation that not all is well with Samantha has fuelled a mass hysteria of publicity - I’m only grateful that Sammy cannot sense them.

Hettie asked me to give a daily bulletin to the Cherinian Embassy for them to keep governments and the media apprised of her condition. The United Nations, once again, have surrounded our home in Athens because my loves have responsibilities and have to be available so they use the house. Cherine is one of them, she has appointments with various charities and in between she listens to the garbage specialists spout about Sam. She has been growing increasingly angry and the chat show of Basil Fredericks from London was just too much for her to keep quiet. Without asking them she jumped.

When she arrived, her emoting was so powerful that everyone stopped talking. Fredericks himself was overjoyed, seeing headlines and fame thanks to her appearance and quickly made space for her on the couch (his station belongs to a new and fairly small media company and his show is struggling to survive, one of many, thanks to television being on the internet and the costs being much smaller than it was before).

“Mrs Teller, welcome to the Fredericks show and may we begin by asking how Samantha Teller is? Have there been any improvements?”

Cherine spoke with ice in her voice, “All she would need to suffer a relapse or, hopefully, enjoy the best laugh of her life, is to hear the nonsense so many experts are tossing about. If you remain silent long enough for me to explain I will do so. Please ensure that I am not interrupted for commercials.” Eagerly he confirmed she would not be interrupted.

“As you should all know by now, one of the qualities that attracts Cherinians for linking people is a sensitivity to the misfortunes of others - what we call empathy. Samantha is sensitive, but not to the point where it would cause problems - as the experts have been claiming. Samantha's weakness is her sense of responsibility for all those she loves. There is a saying for such people that describes them as wearing their heart on their sleeves. Since Samantha has two hearts, she wears them on both her sleeves.

Before I analyse the reasons for her present withdrawal, I must comment on what I’ve been hearing on all the stations. Samantha is not fragile and she is not weak. She is by far the strongest of us. Her problem is that because of her strength and need to help others, she drives herself without pause until her need to be just another human being who is allowed to fail catches up with her and she then must have time on her own, surrounded only by those closest to her heart.

To begin, a brief explanation of one fact should be explained and kept in mind. Whatever our author Arthur assumes, is gospel to her. He told us a long time ago that Robert and Vincent are our protectors and that nothing and no one can harm or stop them if they are acting selflessly to save lives - especially of the family. Now consider what has happened over the last couple of years Freddie time. At a moment of joy Vincent is attacked and is helpless, unable to stop the attacker. As urgently as Sam and Robert try to find ways to protect him there is nothing they can do to save Vincent and he is fading away before their eyes. To say that what was happening was an impossibility that shook all of us would be an understatement. Despite Arthur’s assuming not seeming to be valid, Sam quickly asks him to help and he makes his suggestions that we immediately implement. He also demands that Samantha's worst enemy joins us.

As he has attested publicly, Samantha not only complied with what she assumed Arthur was asking of her, she faced her own anger and bitterness and made a turnaround that astounded both us and Mr Campbell. She became his champion among us and insisted that if he is to help, then he must be empowered.

During the period while we struggled to keep Vincent alive, Sam kept her faith in Arthur. She was hurting not only because his assuming had not worked, but because she feared it might damage her friend Arthur. When we discovered that the attacker was a Robert, Sam felt vindicated and rejoiced. Any Robert can attack Vincent and siphon his energy, for Vincent is not capable of putting up any resistance that would harm any Robert loved by any Cherine. To Vincent it was almost as if a part of himself was draining his energy and soul from him.

7584

What I’m trying to explain is that Samantha went from one extreme of emotion to another. Both hurt her. We were too busy trying to help the alternate Robert recover and grow strong enough for us to bring back his Cherine and daughter, so we forgot the love for our Robert that rules Sam’s heart and mind. Seeing a Robert suffer hurt her. She found the strength to help him and we soon had the pleasure of seeing him with his family again. Then we find out that their Wendy died and the father threw her body into the sea. Not even I am loved by all my family as Wendy is loved, and our empathy forced us to live her final moments and terror. Each of us, for all the pains I’ve mentioned looked to each other for our strength. Not Samantha. She ignored her own needs and concentrated on helping, on using her heart and mind in succeeding.

We return, our hearts rejoicing that all has ended so well when Samantha’s greatest dream and obsession seems to be coming true. She is told we now have a way to find Arthur. She gets carried away and tells him.

The new Allan is found and he confesses that he is not Arthur. I am now going to project for you what he looked like when we found him.”

Cherine stood up and everyone gasped with horror and pity as she took on his appearance.

“As you can see, he was suffering extreme damage thanks to the nuclear war the super powers engaged in on his world. He knew he was dying and was almost totally blind and in great pain and yet, his only thought was to find us in the hope we would save the millions who suffered as he did.” She changed back to her own form and sat down.

“Imagine the conflicting emotions that tore at us. The pain of seeing what an entire world had allowed their leaders to do to them, the news by our scientists that they are all doomed, that their ecology is fast collapsing, the Gulf stream fading so that a new ice age is to arrive within months and within years the planet will only support some insects and bacteria. We not only have to heal the sick and save the people, we have an entire planet to heal. Luckily the aliens with the technology available to them immediately took action, calling from their home worlds for help that must have cost their people enormous amounts in energy - I mention energy since that is the true multi universal coin.

We spent months healing people. To non-Cherinians it sounds so nice, we find someone in need of our healers and we heal them. That is not the entire picture. When we are faced by them we also have to bear their pain and misery. Sam fought to save their lives with us. Samantha was finding it very difficult to write for Arthur. His generous message within minutes of his learning he would not be found only deepened Samantha’s love for him and something very precious within her was in danger of being shattered. It is our shame that though we are Cherinians and family, we failed to realise that she was hiding herself from us. However, I believe that given time and love, Samantha would have healed herself.

I’ve heard Terrans, Cherinians and Normals, argue which of the species is most loved by us Terrans. For many it is the Wirms. For some it is the Anadir and the Sparklers. Our Samantha also has a special love for the Sparklers. Not only because of Solomon, and not because of all the sacrifices they make to help all species, but because of what they are as a people. She quotes them to us as an example for us to emulate constantly. Suddenly Solomon warns her that the changes we’ve brought to them is likely to destroy them as a people. It was the last straw and it broke her, for she took the responsibility upon herself, just as she does for any suffering of Arthur.

I have finished, with only one more thing to say to everyone. Stop looking to experts for explanations and look to your own hearts. That is where you will find the right answers.”

She left before they could ask any questions and sat at home watching them on our web-television, biting her nails as they again allowed their experts to have their say. This was the first time I did not rush to hold her, for I could not leave our Sam.

7586

7587

I’ll write about something that happened that Robbie did not comment on - btw, why is it that you end up frightening off all the other girls when they come to write for you? It must have been special for you having Sheena write for you. So, here goes:

While Robbie was kept out by Dommi, he found himself being hounded by Sebura. He wanted to enter my world and help me. After Athel went to sleep and Robbie had held me in his arms, he sensed I was not ready to come out to face everyone, so he told me of Sebura’s demands. I was amused, wondering how he intended helping me and agreed for Robbie to bring him.

His appearance was not suitable for Hesina’s world. He looked savage, dressed as he used to dress many years ago or else when he goes into the field with his riders. If I did not understand his reasons his first words made his intentions clear.

“Samantha.” His fingers held on to mine as he stared into my eyes. “You are hanging onto slippery moss?”

I nodded, touched. “I was too close to the cliff this time Sebura.”

“This world, it has surprises or is it all like this?”

“It is not my world Sebura, it belongs to Hesina.”

7588

“Hesina, would your world allow us a small adventure? No fires, priests and deaths, just something to test us?”

“Samantha must not know what to expect?” He nodded. “You want nights around a fire with stars in the sky?” Again he nodded. “You will not mind if it is a funny world?”

“We won’t.” I answered, knowing Sebura did not understand the reason for her question.

Wisely she answered, “Return in two days Samantha, your family need you.”

So it is Arthur, that Sebura and I are to go on a small adventure in the morning. I think Sebura will be disappointed, for Hesina is more likely to contrive situations that will make her laugh rather than test us with danger as he wishes.

In the days before Cherinians gave everyone perfect health, in the theatre, the star of the show would have an understudy who spent his or her time hoping the star gets sick so as to have the opportunity of starring in the show. The custom is less prevalent now, but it does occur now and then - as is the case with me for instance. Not that I’m available for when Sam is sick, but for some reason she has taken to using me to write for her when she thinks or knows she will be the main subject of my writing. I don’t know why she bothers, since Arthur mangles everything she or I write and turns her into the star permanently.

As Sebura was about to leave his body to enter Hesina’s world, he turned to Robert anxiously. “You will not steal my sex again?” Robert frowned as if considering it and we all laughed.

Hesina looked just like a spoilt little girl of about seven as she stood with hands on her hips and spoke in a bossy manner, but the glint in her eye told us that she was amused by herself and the role she was supposed to play. “First of all, I am not Meli so don’t expect anything complex. Second, there are rules Sebura. I have to live here, it is my home. As a guest I expect you to avoid killing anything…unless a monster tries to eat you.” She relaxed her poise. “I hope you enjoy my kind of tests. Sam, I’ve had to increase the size of my world, if you want you can make it smaller afterwards.” She kissed Sam and shook hands with Sebura and she disappeared.

“Monsters? Perhaps I should have brought my little Piri to protect us?” Hesina must have been very happy to hear them begin their adventure with Samantha laughing.

Sebura looked around. “Where do we go?”

“Away from here, unless your idea of an adventure is sitting on the lawn pretending to drink tea out of doll sized teacups. Any direction should do. I see we’ve both been provided with good boots and, a knife and rope, but little food. I wonder whether we’ll get thirsty or hungry.”

Cheerfully they aimed for the forest and Sam led him to the nest. Sebura stared at the sleeping boy. “This is Arthur? He is green?”

“That is strange, when he was awake he had a normal colour, but now his skin has a green-blue tint. Sebura, Arthur sent me his love in this form so that I can see and know he is here with me. He has promised Athel will remain here until I die.”

He nodded, his face trying to look serious, but his eyes laughing at Sam. “I understand, when I was told that you had many fights with him I thought it foolish of you, but I see you thought of him as a Sebura you had to change. This is the proof that you succeeded. Poor Sebura; poor Arthur.”

As they strode out of the forest they saw a mountain range at about five days fast walk from them, their snow-clad peaks clearly etched against the bright cerulean of the sky. Samantha whistled. “She has made this world bigger!”

“That is a sign?” Sebura pointed at a plank tied to the trunk of a tree. It bore the message:

7589

“She’s teasing us with Candy’s eyes of life. Now that it has been pointed out, the snow on the mountain with the rock in the middle of it does vaguely have the shape of an eye. I don’t know whether we’ll hunger and thirst Sebura, but it looks like we’re going to freeze.”

“How is it Hesina is you, but you do not know what she plans?”

“I’m not certain I can explain it. I suppose I could know what she thinks if I really wanted to, but then, what would be the purpose of her existing? She is the healthier part of me who also remains forever a true child. Whenever I spend time with her, my heart is refreshed.”

Ahead of them a river crossed the landscape and they saw weeping willow trees on the embankment. They decided to stop there for a brief rest. Sebura sat, but Sam lay down and stared up into the complex lacework of frilly branches above her waving slightly in the gentle breeze.

“Sebura, I’ve noticed you spend your days in the library while in Freddie and when in Athens you ask to be taken to the London library almost every day to study. You proved from the first day we met that you have an incredible mind, but I hope the changes I brought to you also bring you happiness.”

He shrugged. “Perhaps I shall prove Efineh was right?” Sam grinned as she recalled how she’d feared the possibility.

They heard a giggle as they suddenly found themselves entangled in the thin wiry branches of the trees. Sebura managed to get hold of his knife, but Sam was too slow. Frantically he tried to cut himself free, but the knife could not slice through even the slightest vine-like branch. Their panicky thrashing slowed as the vines soon completely restricted their movements.

Exhausted they lay trussed like offerings as they considered their predicament. Sam said, “Hesina would not plan for brute force to free us, we must use our brains.”

Two hours later Hesina arrived. They stared at her without speaking, surprised at her uncharacteristic stern look. The trees uncoiled their branches, letting them go. “You both failed.”

“What were we supposed to do?” Samantha asked.

“Are you certain you wish to continue with the game?”

“Yes.”

“Only if you tried to free each other would the trees not resist you. Do you need for me to explain what this world responds to?”

Sam shook her head and then explained to Sebura, “She means it only responds to love.”

Hesina grinned, her face lighting up with her usual good humour. “And to laughter Samantha.”

Sam giggled. “Do you mean we could have laughed our way out of those damn branches?”

They’d walked alongside the river in both directions and not found any obvious crossing point. At the narrowest it was twenty metres and at the widest, about sixty. The water was over three metres deep but not fast flowing. It was easy to swim across, but Samantha refused to do so.

“Think like Hesina. To get to the mountain we have to cross the river. It has no rapids, no crocodiles and is an easy swim. I don’t trust what I see, she’s up to some trick again.”

“Does she expect us to build a bridge?”

Sam laughed. “Shall we ask Dikoras to build the bridge for us?” She bit her lip. “She’s taken away our ability to fly or jump, we cannot cut any trees for floating across and there are no stones for building a bridge, so we’ll have to swim across. How do we do that?”

“I’ve seen you swim and I had to learn because of Piri.”

“I meant, do we go across separately, stay alongside each other in case the other needs help?”

7590

“I’ll swim across so that you can throw the satchel of food before you enter the water, otherwise we won’t have anything to eat if it gets wet.”

“I should swim across for you to throw the food at me, you’re stronger.”

“You don’t have any of your powers?”

Sam grinned. “The only time you’ll ever find me just a normal girl and it has to be within my own mind. What the old Sebura wouldn’t have given to be here.”

He was not amused, but pretended a smile. “Even as a normal girl I think he would have been wary of challenging you. Are you going to swim across in that dress?”

“Hesina, can you change me into jeans and a blouse?” There was no answer and nothing happened. She shrugged and started to undo the buttons when she suddenly found herself in jeans and a blouse. She grinned, guessing that Robbie had demanded Hesina change her. I wondered why Hesina had been reluctant, had Robbie short-circuited a test of hers?

Sam swam across and after throwing the parcel of food across, Sebura awkwardly swam to her side. Hours later they reached close to the top of a very steep hill and Sebura took her hand and pulled her as he reached the flat top. They took a couple of steps and Sam just had time to notice that the grass was brown when it sagged and collapsed beneath them. I think she screamed ‘no’ as they fell, slipping and sliding down a sloped tunnel. Their worst fears came true, they were dunked into the river.

Sam stood on the bank, sopping wet, and shouted, “Hesina, this is supposed to be an adventure, not a playground!” Sebura did not comment, concentrating instead on their food. They ate what would spoil and Sam refused to climb the hill again, preferring to have a good sleep first.

In the morning she suggested they take a round about route to avoid the steep slope. They walked up a gently sloping dry river bed between the hills. Within the hour the view behind them was blocked by hills as the river bed twisted and turned and they could only see about a hundred metres ahead as the river followed the contour of a hill. Sebura reacted faster than Sam did and started scrambling to rise up the side, looked back and reached for her as a wall of frothing water rushed in upon them and they ended up in the river below again.

Again, Sam furiously shouted, “You’re cheating, you can’t have a flash flood without rain!” Stubbornly she started walking back up the once more dry river bed so Sebura followed. They reached further than the first time when they saw a wall of mud and twigs ahead. Something that resembled a beaver looked down on them and I swear it wore a smile as its tail whacked and a part of the dam collapsed and another wall of water rushed them back to the river. They tried finding their way to a higher level by winding their way around the hills at about twenty metres above the river bed. Either gravel, slippery grass or collapsing ground sent them back to the river each time they tried. The fifth time they arrived there was a picnic waiting for them. They collapsed on the grass and nibbled as they discussed what strategy to follow next.

“There’s no other way, we’ll have to climb the steep slope again.”

They reached the top and stared at the flat area which was now covered in green grass. They skirted the area anyway and continued towards the mountains. They reached the edge of a cliff and saw a ravine before them. The drop must have been at least a hundred and thirty metres. Reaching across to the other side they saw a slightly sagging rope. Sam decided then and there that she was not prepared to hang from it as she made her way across. Sebura seemed to feel happier at her decision. They checked and saw they have reached a deadend, the ravine covered all sides except for the steep slope they’d climbed up.

“Shall we leave this for some other time? I’d like to get back to the taverna for some grilled lamb chops and salad.” He nodded and Hesina’s world faded away.

The two of us were mercilessly kidded, but there was a surprise development. Four of the Akiard kids and Bobby asked whether they can try to get to the mountains. The next day they went, spent nearly a week there, on and off, and returned without accomplishing their mission. Now everyone wants to try Hesina’s obstacle course just for the satisfaction of saying they succeeded where we did not. Good luck to them.

I hope you enjoy reading this story of fantasy, adventure and love - and should some of it be true for our reality, I hope you will love our Cherine.
