Music Shadows Photo Contest Entry
It is Shadow Photo Contest Round 80 - Music Shadows, hosted by @melinda010100.
My choice for the shadow is one unusual musical instrument - theremin. Theremin is an electronic musical instrument.
It looks like portable radio. To get the sound you need an amplifier and then to start creating music by moving your hands around the antenna without touching it. Our theramin is a small version of the instruments played by professional musicians.
To get an idea how it looks like playing theremin please have a look at that video with the performance of the soundrack to the film Once Upon a Time in the West.
The professional theremin consists of two antennae not like ours with one only. The misician plays like on invisisble harp. The antennae sense the relative position of the hands and control oscil lators for frequency with one hand, and amplitude (volume) with the other. Ours has only pitch control and it is hard to play. Which we found out quickly and now the instrument is left in the cupboard.
Some interesting facts.
The inventor Lev Theremin, also known as Léon Theremin is Russian physicist who first had a tour in Europe and then he went in the United States where he patented his invention in 1928
Musician Jean-Michel Jarre used the instrument in his concerts Oxygen In Moscow and Space of Freedom in Gdańsk, providing also a short history of Léon Theremin's life.
The indtrument is used for soundracks of other films and TV dramas such as Spellbound, The Lost Weekend, The Day the Earth Stood Still, First Man, Midsomer Murders.
On 20 July 2013, a group of 272 theremin players (Matryomin ensemble) in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka, Japan, achieved a Guinness world record as the largest theremin ensemble.[37] The name Matryomin is a portmanteau of the words matryoshka and theremin.

A strange instrument, I remember J.M.Jarre singing this way, moving his hands.
The instrument is very strange and I did not manage to make any nice sound, but I love to listen to musicians that have mastered it.
I'm sure it's hard to use.

How very interesting! I have never heard of this way of making music and have never heard it played. Thanks for choosing this for your music shadow and teaching me something new!
The shadow did not come up as planned, so I thought it would be good to give some information about this rather unknown instrument.

I personally have discovered it recently and bought this one. My hubby wished to learn to play but it seems he lost interest.
Any Musicall things in our house are y wife she has some musical talent i have none

That is different it looks like a old school radio only modified nicely with beautiful coloring :)
It looks like radio and if you don't know what it is you can easily be mistaken. I think I can try again to play with it. The trouble is, except that I can't make decent sound, the dogs start to howl when they hear it.😀
Haha...how funny as long as the dogs are in tune it should sound pretty good...lol :)
