The Redemption Price of the First Born

Five Silver Shekels

The Most High loves the people upon the earth so much that even in his judgment of Egypt, He applies equal weights and balances to His people. As he destroyed the first born sons of Egypt in the plague, He also requires His people to redeem their firstborn sons with silver.

You shall redeem all the first-born of man among your sons, and it shall be when your son asks you in time to come, saying: "What is this?" Then you shall say to him: By strength of hand the LORD brought us out from Egypt, from the house of bondage and it came to pass, when Pharaoh would hardly let us go that the LORD slew all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both the first-born of man, and the first-born of beast; therefore I sacrifice to the LORD all that opens the womb, being males; but all the first-born of my sons I redeem. Exodus 13:14-15

Because we do not practice human sacrifice (God Forbid), the first male to exit the womb must be bought back.

Every thing that opens the womb, of all flesh which they offer unto the LORD, both of man and beast, shall be yours; however you must redeem the first-born of man... and their redemption-money--from a month old you shall redeem them--shall be, according to your valuation, five shekels of silver. Numbers 18:16

Five silver shekels weight (about 4.1 Troy Oz) is the valuation of a firstborn son. We know how much the Most High values life, no amount of silver could really be worth a human life - yet according to the ancient valuation, a first born son is worth about 4.1 oz of silver.

Goes to show how valuable silver was in those days.

Believers are Redeemed Also

We are also redeemed in the eyes of the Most High, those who live a life of repentance, living in the righteousness of the Most High, who have been redeemed from this world by the Messiah Yeshua.

We were not redeemed with silver, but with something far more precious than metal.

You know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life you inherited from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Messiah, a lamb without blemish or spot. 1 Peter 1:18
