Secrets of Organ Playing Week 58 – Gigue from 2nd Organ Concerto – Michel Corrette

avatar
(Edited)

Michel Corrette was a French organist. Teacher and composer who lived from 1707 – 1775. His output consists of 6 organ books, a number of books of harpsichord pieces, choral music and over 17 music methods for a variety of instruments plus the voice. Corrette can lay claim to having written the first French keyboard concertos. Although Balbastre had written an organ concerto before Corrette, this was for organ solo. Corrette’s concertos require a chamber orchestra comprising three violins, viola and cello. Concertos 3 and 6 require a flute in addition to the strings. It is very likely that Corrette was influenced hearing Handel’s Concertos in London in the late 1730s. In style, the outer movements are very much Italian whilst the inner movements are French. With the exception of the third concerto, Corrette specified that the concertos could be play on the organ alone. As a marketing ploy, he also stated that the harpsichord could be substituted for the organ. It is interesting to note that the bass in the concertos extends to bottom B, A and G, notes all available on the harpsichord. The highest note required is E5.

The Gigue from the 2nd Concerto in A is a delightful, extraverted movement in Binary form.

I feel that this melody has Handel's influence. The sound is very cheerful while remaining tender. A sound of angels. Thanks for this piece @tormus1958

Thank you. Handel was very influenced by the Italian style and so was Corrette. This is an important point in common with these two composers. Corrette did have his detractors in French who were supporting the French style. You might recall the famous ‘Guerre des bouffons’ where French society was divided in opinion on the prevailing French and Italian styles.
