Vidas Pinkevicius - Echo

avatar

Here is a piece which Vidas wrote and dedicated to me. Vidas presented a very interesting video on to show organists how laboriously he worked on learning the notes. Here is my performance of the work. It is called 'Echo' because it is contrasting loud and soft divisions on the organ. The registration calls for a 16' plenum for the loud sections and 8, 4, 2 registers for the soft. The organ upon which I am playing is the op 22 Létourneau organ (1989) in the Boys' Chapel at St Aloysius College, Milsons Point, Sydney, the Jesuit college where I was educated from 1966 - 1975. This fine organ only appeared in more recent years. The one upon which I used to play was a mere 4 rank extension organ. The Létourneau does not have a manual 16' so I had to make a compromise: I played the loud sections a octave lower in order to achieve the 16' plenum effect. In one bar where the bass requires a low A and G, I simply played these on the pedal 16, 8, 4 coupled to the loud manual. Vidas does give an alternative registration ie the piece can be played on one manual. The performer has a lot to concentrate on, apart from manual changes. There are frequent changes in time signatures.
