Elon Musk On Populating Mars

Elon Musk has big dreams. One of his goals with SpaceX is to put 1 million people on Mars. In the past, he laid out a few ideas regarding his plans with this. He decided to expand his idea a bit in his latest discussion on the topic.

According to the entrepreneur, his goal is to have 100 Starships produced each year, putting more than 1,000 into operation over the course of a decade. With that many ships, he feels he can be brisk, releasing 3 launches per day. That would equate to over 1,000 Mars journeys per year.

Such a pace would be required to get all the people and supplies up there. Musk claims his goal is to get 1 million to Mars by 2050.

The Starship program is in development now. This is a key component for Musk's vision. The Starlink program is also going into orbit with 180 satellites launched. Over the next few years, the goal is to get 12,000 satellites providing Internet coverage to the entire planet. This will help to fund the Mars mission.

Many have thought it a total waste of time and money to pursue Mars. Some believe the Moon will be a better choice is we are to occupy a second body.

Conspiracy theorists espouse the idea that this is just a way for the rich to leave the rest of humanity behind. With the doom and gloom picture that is being painted, some feel escaping Earth is crucial for humanities survival.

Space holds enormous potential from a financial perspective. Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic went public last year. This is an entity that is focused upon creating the space tourism industry. The fleet of rockets will bring "tourists" into space for a holiday.

Whatever the eventual outcome, we are surely to see a major burst in productivity if what Musk is planning does come into being. Populating a new planet is going to require a lot of innovation. This will only serve to assist humanity, presenting enormous opportunities going forward.

Another areas of space that is getting a lot of interest is in asteroid mining. With technology over the last decade, we are able to identify the heavenly bodies that are floating around near Earth. We are seeing hundreds of millions being raised to try to target this market. It is estimated that the first trillionaire will come from this field. Some asteroids are projected to be valued at quadrillions of dollars.

For those who love space, the next 30-50 years are going to be very interesting. At the same time, it is an enormous opportunity for those interested in money.

As an engineer, this scares the hell out of me, well currently.

I think we will one day get there, but the amount of fuel and resources we will need just to get there and then start building.

Safety would have to be the 1st priority and just don't think we're there yet either.

I'm sure all the concerns the first travelers on airplanes felt, but lets just say I'd rather not be the first person on the airplane to test everything out.
