Confessions of a Steem scum-bag

avatar

I really thought hard about whether to write this post as it gives someone publicity they do not deserve, but my motives have been questioned and I have to stand up for myself.

I do not even remember how it originated, but user @pocketechange set up another account @pocket-change for which they were buying votes on junk posts. These were zeroed out by @steemflagrewards and I helped with that as I have in many other cases. Since then they have stopped posting apart from updating their last post to slag off various people and sending many transfer memoes calling us 'scum-bags'. It seems they do not dare post for fear of their reputation going down, but I would not flag anyone for venting opinions unless they are being really nasty to people. I mainly downvote to remove unearned rewards.

Memo

They claim that delegating for profit is a 'sin'. Well why do they think most of us are on Steem? I do aim to do good, but I think I can expect some reward in the long run. I do a lot of what I do to try and make Steem a better place for those who add value and want it to prosper. That includes downvoting those who seek to abuse the platform. That is how Steem was intended to work if you read the white paper. The free downvotes we got last year incentivise us to downvote more.

They asked why I have delegated over 8000 SP and who profits from it, so let me tell you.

You can see one example above. The @exhaust account upvotes runners and I help increase their vote. For that I get a very small amount each day. I reckon I get less than 10% return on my 250 SP. I could get a better rate elsewhere on Steem, but that is not my priority. The few dollars that makes me each year might buy me one beer.

As with most things on the Steem blockchain my delegations are public. You can see them on Steemworld

Delegations

The biggest by far is to my @tenkminnows account that automatically votes up a set of small accounts I have chosen to support. Some are already minnows, but I try to help others get to that level. This account has earned nearly 750 Steem from posts and curation. I do not intend to take that for myself. I am thinking that when we eventually get to 10,000 minnows I will power it down and distribute the Steem to selected small accounts.

I delegate to @steemflagrewards as I see it as being an important project to keep abuse of the Steem platform under control. It would be overloaded with crap without them. SFR get a lot more delegations from others. I do get some SFR tokens for downvoting people that I can use to buy votes. I mainly buy them for posts by others that I think are under-rewarded, but I may buy the odd one for myself. That is likely to gain me less than a dollar per week. Considering the hours each week I spend on Steem that includes dealing with abuse my hourly rate is pitiful.

@runningproject also supports runners. I was delegating to their @isotonic bot that gave me a small return, but I thought it was being abused. They have stopped selling votes, but I will keep supporting the main account.

@giftgiver gives delegation to those who need it and I offered to help increase their votes.

@chops.support is similar to @tenkminnows and is run by @slobberchops. I get nothing back from that apart from small votes on my posts.

The rest of my delegations go to other projects that do not pay me and to individuals I want to support. I created some of those accounts for people and they need some delegated SP in order to operate.

So I would like to ask @pocketechange to give me their thoughts on this. Am I such a bad person to want Steem to be better? I could have cashed out when Steem was several dollars and I would have done well from it. I did sell some Steem ages ago to go to Steemfest and buy a few things, but in the last couple of years I have not powered down and have hardly self-voted. I have bought several thousand Steem. If Steem should achieve a much higher price then I may sell some again to treat myself, but for now I will keep powering up so I can do more good.

If @pocketechange comments on this post I will not downvote them unless they do something silly like buying votes or start threatening people. Let us keep this civil. I want everyone to have the chance to earn on Steem, but it should be based on the founding principles of community support and we should treat each other with respect. The positive responses I have had in the past on this topic make me think I am on the right path.

Your move!

I am still tempted to get this shirt printed.

We all need some drama, I feel a little left out as each memo gifts me with 0.001 STEEM. How can I ever get rich when I'm off the 'list'. I have had but one SCUMBAG memo to date. ... sulk...

Well every tiny bit increases my votes and flags. I could actually filter those out and they would have to send me more to get noticed :)

You tell em man! Anyone who knows you sees what kind of citizen you have been for the longest time. These butt-hurt losers are just throwing tantrums because someone is calling them on their bullshit.

You don’t have to be the sheriff but active citizens looking out for each other and our neighbourhood makes for strength.

If you get some of those made, I want one and I am sure so would @sequentialvibe ;)

It just needs enough of us to care. Steem involves some give and take, but some just take. It's just amazing how long some of these people keep complaining and/or flagging me. If they don't like Steem then they can go elsewhere.

Well said! It's your stake to delegate the way you see fit. What you are doing is not a detriment to the blockchain. What they are doing is. That is all that needs to be said really.

Sucks that one has to "explain" themselves to anyone but such I the platform we're on.

I don't have to justify my motives to them, but I'd like them to understand how I see Steem.

Oh well, we all have our separate views about Steem and society as a whole. We draw parallels when need be and other times, have differences. It's life and something that people weirdly fail to accept. Do your thing Sir. ✊

In another twist @pocketechange bought me this vote, but still doesn't dare to comment. Come on and I'll give you a vote to say thanks. It's not too late to be social. It's much more fun than sneaking around the shadows.

I assume someone else bought me an SFR vote. Thanks to whitener it was.

Or it could have been whoever has control of that account. It wasn't me anyway. I'm grateful anyway. Frustrating as that community can be they mean a lot to me.

Lol I only found this post because I came here to flag bid bot buying but I got so much more from it

I'd rather that @pocketechange didn't keep feeding these bots. Others are more deserving, but thanks anyway. I shall celebrate all this wealth with a biscuit. Can't you see I'm not exactly getting rich from all this, but I love the Steem community. Life is not all about the pursuit of money.

delegating for profit is a 'sin'
as selling delegations? or... never thought about delegation as a "sin". maybe if you sell delegation to someone who upvotes himself 100% all the time... this was a weird one

There are people who don't post or even vote, but they delegate to others who will use it and pay them something. It's another opportunity to earn. I care more about what is getting upvoted. I can't look at everything but I trust others to find good content. What I make from that is not so important.

as i understand that there is a dapp that deals with SP delegation (renting). you offer amount of sp and ask for amount of steem for it for a period of time. i see no problem with it.

Yet does this person understand that those who are delegating, their stake didn't fall out of the sky, they took a risk and purchased or earned it through contributions. Their willingness to keep steem staked has far-reaching effects such as witness voting and so much more

Gotta wonder which Holy Text mentions delegating for profit as falling into the proscribed sin category along with the usual suspects like bearing false witness, murder, and taking the last piece of cake when you’ve already had one and your cousin hasn’t yet had any.

To be fair I am the original scumbag that kicked this off. I started joining steemflagrewards and use my stake as you to remove unearned rewards. The stake I have is part earned part purchased. I should be able to do what I want with it, If I want to delegate it so be it.

I often get my own posts flagged for what I do so I also "lose" for trying to push steem in a way I feel it should go its not like its all profit. I've never powered down and want more influence so I can continue to push my views on the chain and people disagree they can do the same.

I don't downvote for opinions, only spam and blatant profiteering. Not saying I'm perfect but happy to be a scumbag.

I don't care about previous posts, I flagged posts that were buying upvotes regardless of the reason behind it. I've flagged enough people to have heard all the excuse, oh it was an experiment, oh I didn't know, oh why are their bid bots if i cant use them bla bla bla

This person has dragged out something so small for so long, I thought they would get over it by now gosh, some people know how to hold a grudge.

We hold very similar views and I am grateful for all you do. None of us has time to seek out all the abusers. I check the SFR mentions on the Discord and often find you got there first. Some people just don't get how bad things would be if we did nothing. Most of the excuses are lame, but I do give some a chance to prove they can do better. We just get the odd one who won't let it go. I hope they find happiness elsewhere in their lives.
