Self-study - Jump-start for your child

At the age of 12, a child should take care of his own school affairs. This also includes independent and responsible learning and practice. Of course you should support your child if it asks. Gradually, however, it should and must be able to motivate itself to learn.

Everything children do and do on their own promotes self-confidence. This also applies to learning. Limit your suggestions to suggestions, but leave the implementation to your child as much as possible. With the following learning aids from fatherfreuden.de you can achieve that your child learns self-reliant learning without resistance and frustration.

From the beginning, show interest in what your child is doing at school. By doing so, you convey that school and learning are important. Demand a certain amount of learning and practice time. Afterwards, go through the successes and achievements of the child with him. If your child asks you for help because he does not understand the substance, explain the contents to him, if possible. Make sure that you follow the methods and techniques of the teacher.

In school, the "how" is often not sufficiently practiced. Help your child find suitable learning techniques: how to learn vocabulary or multiplication by heart? How does text work work, how do you prepare for a class work? Valuable learning tips can be found here, for example:

These tips for parents should serve as a suggestion or as a guide for parents of schoolchildren. It does not matter if your child has learning problems or if you just want to support your already successful child.

Tip 1:
Go with child in the library and register there immediately. Find out what kind of books your child prefers (science fiction, computer books, novels, books for the Indians ...). Take your child a book right away.

Tip 2:
Give your child an approximate schedule for the afternoon. This should leave enough time to play in addition to the homework, but the child gradually get used to fixed learning times.

Tip 3:
Talk to the class teacher of your child more often. This will tell you in time where your child is having problems. Also tell the teacher that he can call you when there are problems.

Tip 4:
Do not undermine the authority of teachers. How should your child respect a teacher if you talk badly about them? If there are serious disadvantages to your child, talk to the teacher or the school principal.

Tip 5:
Reward (for example more pocket money) for good grades with the kids. Do not spoil the child, but still provide an incentive. The reward does not necessarily have to be money, it can also be a weekend trip (castle, amusement park, adventure pool ...).

Tip 6:
In addition to giving your child learning materials, not in the place of toys. Emphasize this too.

Tip 7:
Your child also has to take breaks while learning. Many children do not know this. Tell your child to take a short break (5-10min) after 45 minutes of study time.

Tip 8:
Create a good learning environment for your child by creating a spacious, well-lit workspace.

Tip 9:
If possible, use daylight. If there is not enough, you can use daylight lamps.

Tip 10:
Keep calm! Nobody can learn well in noise or music. If necessary, earplugs are helpful here. Do not disturb your child by constantly looking.

Tip 11:
Good nutrition is important not only for your child's development, but also for their learning outcomes. Valuable tips on how to improve it are contained in the book:

Tip 12:
Give your child a break for lunch too. If you only give your child money, it usually buys only unhealthy things at the school kiosk. In addition, you can give your child also fruits and vegetables.

Tip 13:
Motivate your child in case of failures in school and praise it with good grades. In any case, avoid such phrases as, "Nothing turns out to be you" or "you are too stupid".

Tip 14:
Make sure that your child drinks enough, there is scientific research, which shows that in dehydration brain performance decreases enormously. The best is mineral water, fruit juice spritzer or tea. Roibosch tea is especially recommended as a tea, as it tastes slightly sweet and fruity.

Tip 15:
Is your child doing enough sports in your spare time? If not, you will be able to help a bit and look for a sports club (together with your child, of course). Team sports are very good as your child learns team spirit.

Tip 16:
If you have the impression that your child has problems with concentration and looks pale and exhausted, then it is quite possible that your child is suffering from iron deficiency. This can be determined by a blood test at the doctor and, if necessary, treated afterwards.

Tip 17:
Lead by example and show your child how important learning is. Emphasize that you can succeed only through diligent learning. Or you sign up for a further education or a folk high school course.

Children have to learn organization first. Help him. This starts with the homework assignment and also includes learning strategies, assessment of learning effort and analysis of mistakes.

Until children have learned to learn independently, some time passes. Support your child to the extent that they need help. No more and no less. So you gradually release it to self-employment - this applies to learning and homework as well as other areas of life.
