# 714 - 21st Century Type Set - Part 1

avatar

A 21st-century type coin set consists of one coin bearing each design produced by the United States Mint during the 21st century. That is an enormous number of coins (commemoratives, state quarters, ATB quarters, Sacagawea dollars, etc) in both circulated/uncirculated and proof finishes. We must not forget the material of the coins like clad, silver, gold, copper, platinum, etc.

The NGC type coin registry takes the one type coin for the series approach. Therefore that is only one State Quarter, one America the Beautiful Quarter, one Sacagawea Dollar and one Presidential Dollar required. They only consider coins that were meant for circulation, so no commemoratives and no gold or platinum coins.

I decided to collect a NGC-like 21st century type coin set but, looking always for perfection, my collection is made only by PR-70 coins.

Let's show it, in order of value and year of each coin.

The first is a 1 cent Lincoln Memorial. It was minted from 2001 to 2008. Remember that the 21st century started in 2001...

It was made of copper-plated zinc and weights 2.5g.

NGC graded 4,723 2007-S 1 cent Proofs, with 578 as PF-70 RD UC. 2,577,166 coins were minted in San Francisco in 2007.

I bought this coin in 2014 for $40.00 and today's price is around $90.00.

The obverse, showing the portrait in right profile of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States from 1861 to 1865, was designed by Victor David Brenner.

The reverse, showing the Lincoln Memorial, was designed by Frank Gasparro.

That’s awesome you are doing a type set. When i first got back into collecting after losing my entire collection, that was my goal to do a complete US coinage type set. But because I only want high quality coins after about a year of doing it I realized it wasn’t possible without hitting the lottery.

That is why I am collecting a 21st century Proof type set. It is very beautiful and is not expensive.

Oh I totally get it. I did a quick tally of what it would’ve cost me using AU55 as my base coin. The type set back ten years ago when i priced it was over 200K

A 20th century type set could be very expensive in high grade, but this is a Proof 21st type set. Not expensive because all the coins are recently minted.
