# 716 - 21st Century Type Set - Part 2

avatar

A 21st-century type coin set consists of one coin bearing each design produced by the United States Mint during the 21st century. That is an enormous number of coins (commemoratives, state quarters, ATB quarters, Sacagawea dollars, etc) in both circulated/uncirculated and proof finishes. We must not forget the material of the coins like clad, silver, gold, copper, platinum, etc.

The NGC type coin registry takes the one type coin for the series approach. Therefore that is only one State Quarter, one America the Beautiful Quarter, one Sacagawea Dollar and one Presidential Dollar required. They only consider coins that were meant for circulation, so no commemoratives and no gold or platinum coins.

I decided to collect a NGC-like 21st century type coin set but, looking always for perfection, my collection is made only by PR-70 coins.

Let's show it, in order of value and year of each coin.

The second is a PR-70 2009-S Lincoln Bicentennial Cent.

It was made of 95% copper, 5% tin and zinc and weights 3.11g.

The info below comes from https://lincolncents.net/2009-lincoln-cent/

"To commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln, four different reverse designs are used for the 2009 Lincoln Cent. Each design is intended to be representative of one of the stages of his life, from birth to presidency.
The first 2009 Lincoln Cent design represents Lincoln’s birthplace and early childhood in Kentucky, chronologically covering 1809 to 1816."

NGC graded 14,439 2009-S 1 cent "Birth and Childhood" Proofs, with 1905 as PF-70 RD UC. 2,995,615 coins were minted in San Francisco in 2009.

I bought this coin in 2013 for $44.00 and today's price is around $70.00.

"The reverse depicts an image of a log cabin to represent Lincoln’s humble upbringing. The date of his birth “1809” appears below the cabin. This reverse was designed by Richard Masters and sculpted by Jim Licaretz."

The obverse, showing the portrait in right profile of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States from 1861 to 1865, was designed by Victor David Brenner.

Lincoln's mother provided much of his early education. She was a rarity on the frontier, in that she could read. Young Lincoln seldom was without a book and spent hours studying Shakespeare, Byron, and even Euclid's geometry. Despite having little formal education, he triumphed with determination. Lincoln ultimately developed a talent for expression rarely equaled by others. Another virtue instilled in Lincoln by his parents was the belief that in America anyone willing to work hard could find betterment. Hard work was what he did best. Stories abound of the "rail-splitter" whose legendary axe skills allowed Lincoln to produce, in a typical day, 400 rails for a wage of 25 cents. By most accounts, his aspiration to succeed was unparalleled.

In 2009 my focus was on buying precious metals. I lost sight of the numismatic part of collecting for a few years. The only penny I have left from my early days is an old 1909 VDB that my grandmother gave me.

I had no clue this 2009 Birth and Childhood penny existed.

Thanks for sharing.

If you look at your pocket, you may find one of these, not proof, of course...

Were any of this design meant for circulation @ronaldoavelino? I haven't followed the U.S. cent but I don't recall this design....

This type set shows only designs that were in circulating coins. The Proof type set is very affordable, while an MS type set at the top grades is very expensive...
