La teoría electromagnética permite investigar de qué forma varían los campos eléctricos y magnéticos en el espacio y tiempo, esta teoría resumida de manera compacta en las ecuaciones de Maxwell, las cuales abarca explícitamente las leyes de Faraday, Ampère y Gauss. Las ecuaciones de Maxwell permiten asimismo determinar numerosas leyes y teoremas de importancia electrostática.
