Estate Saling with Troy

For many years I have enjoyed the pleasure of estate sales. These are three day sales of a person's belonging and are customarily held in their home. Each day the prices are reduced. It is a great way to find gently used quality items at a fraction of the cost that would be paid at a retail store. Marcia and I used to hit many sales in a day. Today I go when I can.

Last weekend I checked out a sale in northwest Davenport, while errand running with my friend George. It was a clean, upscale sale sale with good merchandise. I spotted a box of old, tender sheet music. There must have been 60 pieces and books of music too. Tucked away in with the music was a unique old book.

The United Nations Songbook

This was a United Nations songbook put out by the Iowa State College (now Iowa State University) of Ames, That's just 45 minutes north of Des Moines. Wow! This is a small sized book with about 65 pages. A single copy cost 25 cents when it was published, ten copies was $2.00 and fifty copies was $7.50. The book includes sing -a -longs of the day with a small sprinkling of Christmas and Christian hymns. It reminded me of an old fraternity songbook of brotherhood.

Two Faces of the UN

Oh my God, this can't be the UN we all know today. There was a time that they promoted Christian values? What the hell went wrong? Or was that only propaganda to get you on board? Hmmm. Here is an excerpt from the back page.

Nothing is more disdainful of national boundaries than music, especially folk music. Like sunshine and the wind, it moves freely and impartially between peoples of differing dialects and contrary creeds.

It's Not Your Granddad's UN Today

Well yes, true. But I thought the UN promoted agenda 21 and agenda 2030. I remember the old car commercials when the said, 'This ain't your granddaddy's Oldsmobile.' Well, This must have been a much different UN than we hear about today. Often new ideas and movements only, in time, become evil and that which they rebelled against. And many are not even that honest to begin with. But using music to promote a one world government. Clever.

So what did I pay for a box of 60 songs of old music. $3.50 which is 6 cents per sheet and is cheaper than the original price 70 years ago. You should go estate saling with me sometime. You may enjoy it.
