Gossip - a short story

She was sitting on her chair when the newspaperman came. He was all smiling. She went inside and gave him the money for the monthly subscription. He gave her a receipt and started talking, rather gossiping about the neighbors.

She sighed and her expression must have given it away. He paused and asked her what had made her cringe and she replied that she did not like to hear gossip. He smiled but warily this time and asked her why because he thought that all women loved to gossip.

She asked him to sit down and told him the story of a young couple whose marriage was finished because of gossip. He became sad and promised her that he would not gossip any more from that day onwards. She felt happy. As he walked away from there, he understood that the lady was talking about herself and how a few foul mouths had destroyed her life.
