Survival Tips with Tandy "Shopping Cart Popcorn"

SPOILER ALERT FOR THE TV SHOW THE LAST MAN ON EARTH

This is the first of the Survival Tips with Tandy series based on the television series The Last Man on Earth which aired from 2015 to 2018 and starred Will Forte as he tries to to find and eventually survive with other survivors of a global pandemic that wiped out nearly all life on earth.

As the show progresses Tandy (Will Forte) and others survive using a wide range of tactics. Some that would seem like common sense while others are out right silly.

Every Survival Tips with Tandy examines a survival tactic of Tandy or one of his fellow post apocalyptic survivors.

Today's tip is "Shopping Cart Popcorn".

In Season 01 Episode 02, Raisin Balls and Wedding Bells, a scene finds Tandy both trying to a fun as well as defeat his hunger. He does so by grilling up some popcorn using a shopping cart, a trash can lid, and a flamethrower.

You too can use this trick in a pinch if you're ever in a "the world ended and wasting generator fuel on a microwave is stupid" situation.

What you will need :

• a shopping cart
• a metal trash can lid
• blowtorch (unless you have access and know how to properly use a flamethrower)
• popcorn (stovetop works best but microwave popcorn to work as well)
• cooking oil

You will want to do this in a well ventilated outdoor environment. In the episode Tandy is in a parking lot.

Depending in the post apocalyptic situation, you may or may not have access to a flamethrower. Even if you find yourself with access to one, you shouldn't use one unless you actually are trained to do so. So, instead if a flamethrower we will work with a blowtorch. You could also build a small fire underneath the trashcan lid with found dead wood or debis.

A shopping cart makes a decent grill when in a pinch. I do not recommend grilling right onto the metal due to the paint and plastic on shopping carts. Even after burning it off you may still be better off using a pot or pan. If you do use a shopping cart as a grill and cook directly on the metal, make sure you remove all plastic parts and burn off any paint or plastic left on the cart. Obviously there are many other choices to go with other than a shopping cart but thats beside the point.

When choosing a trashcan lid make sure its steel. Burn off any plastic or paint before using. I recommend giving a little extra time with burning off the residue just to be safe.

Once your shopping cart grill and trashcan lid pan are prepped its time to get poppin' !

• Lay your shopping cart down on its side so that you have one of its sides horizontal to the ground. This side is your grill top.
• Set your trashcan lid pan on top of the shopping cart grill.
• Add cooking oil to your trashcan lid pan. Enough to cook the popcorn but not too much. You do not want to start a grease fire.
• Add your popcorn to your oiled up trashcan lid pan.
• Safely put on flamethrower pack and remember to follow all guidelines in your owner's manual. If you are using a blowtorch as recommended safely hold the blowtorch in your hand and also remember to follow its safety guidelines.
• Torch the fuck out of the buttom of your trashcan lid pan. Do not let your kernels burn as you are heating them up.
• Heat your trashcan lid pan until it is hot enough to finish popping your kernels for you and you are able to catch those suckers as they fly into the air or ubtil2 they are popped to your satisfaction.
• Optional : Add a light drizzling of butter and a sprinkle of salt to taste.
