Tony’s Sub Shop ~ Tasteem Local Dish Review ~ Food Fight Friday Mayham

Well my food flingin’ friends, I see we meet again in the food coma inducing Food Fight Friday Arena. My apologies for my not making it to the arena last week, you folks put me in a food coma for a week and a half! I’m still feeling a bit woozy, so forgive me if I have some spelling and graham cracker errors. This week I have decided to do something a little different and give everyone a double serving. Tasteem.io and Food Fight Friday combine forces for a Local Dish Review of Tony’s Sub Shop. I know I know, I am a two-timin’ no good dirty rotten Food Lovin’ Food Flinger.

If you ever have a chance to venture to a place so nice they named it twice, you gotta take a break for some lunch at Tony’s Sub Shop. Located just outside the old downtown area of Walla Walla, WA on the corner of E. Isaacs and N. Clinton. This Mom and Pop Sub Sandwich shop has menu that will satisfy anyone’s hunger. Did you catch that? The place so nice they named it twice... Walla... Walla If you don’t get it now I can no longer help you, but I can help you by guiding you to a place to fill your belly. I have lived here for over 6 years and Tony’s has totally slipped my mind up until a couple weeks ago. You see my foreman took us here for a crew lunch when I first started working here. The sandwich I had was delicious but for some reason the thought of eating at Tony’s Sub Shop in later days would just slip my mind. Maybe it’s because I don’t spend much time in that area of town and I am not necessarily a big sandwich eating guy. Yet I know a good sandwich when I eat one.

Recently I took Mama Splatts to Tony’s Sub Shop for lunch when the kids were at school, it’s date day Friday. I then went back less than a week later by myself. Yes, I’m hooked on Tony’s Subs for sure. One of these days I am hoping to become a regular at this place. You know regular, it would play out like this: I pull up and park my bucket truck outside, walk in and Tony’s wife will say, “Are you having the usual?” “Yes Ma’am” That’s is what I am talking about, hey maybe even have a tab I can throw a couple tasty cookies on when I get a sweet tooth. Cooookiessss....

One thing I do have to admit is, when those 2 correctional officers came in for lunch and I let them cut in front of me in line because I couldn’t decide what sandwich to have and Tony’s wife said, “Are you having the usual?” She then repeated their typical order. I thought, Now that is what I am talkin’ about! At that point I felt like I needed to reach that level of Food Loving Friendship with the friendly people at Tony’s Sub Shop. This is the only place I have been where being a regular here would be pretty cool. From their Sandwiches and wraps to homemade soups and cookies, friendly fast service, you simply can’t go wrong making a stop at Tony’s for a meal. Plus at lunch time their cookies are Buy One Get One Free! You can’t afford Not to buy some. Alright my sweet tooth is starting to kick in, let’s take a peak at what is on the Menu at Tony’s Sub Shop shall we? I mean I could talk cookies all day...

Tony’s Menu

This is something really cool about Tony’s, any sandwich on their menu can be made into a wrap. That is 31 different sandwiches that can be made into wraps instead. You know if you are trying to cut back on those carbs :wink:wink. Hold up! Do you see that one? Gutt Bomb... How did I not see that one before!! I have got to give that one a try next time for sure. But there is another sandwich I have heard good things about the Full Boat, rumor has it that this is a Monster of a sandwich. I tend to take those kind of rumors as a personal challenge, I will devour the Full Boat one day and that is a promise.

Now they don’t just sell sandwiches, remember I mentioned those tasty cookies? Ya, those will come into play later in this review. Grilled Panini Subs, Build your own salads, espresso and coffee, breakfast items such as biscuits and gravy or a breakfast sandwich!! Dang I could just spend all day at Tony’s eating one of each item off the menu. Wait don’t forget they offer Party Subs for those big family and friend get togethers.

Soups, let’s sip on these soups they have for a minute. Hmmm Soup of the Day or chili?? Instantly I think of the movie Dumb and Dumber whenever someone says, “Soup of the Day”

Lloyd, “What’s your Soup De Jour?
Waitress, “It’s the Soup of the Day

Best Comedy of all time

At Tony’s they don’t just have 1 Soup of the day. They keep with the theme of their menu and offer you multiple Soups of the Day. Variety is the soup spice of life right? It’s a little hard to see because of the glare, or should I say nearly impossible to read but with my Food Fight Friday vision my eyes can cut right through the glare...

Foodie Vision Engaged

  • Corn Chowder
  • Chicken Dumpling
  • Chicken Fiesta
  • Chicken and Rice
  • Chili

I take it the theme was chicken, what do you think? Either way, that is a nice selection of soups to dip your taste buds in, wouldn’t you say? Order up a Grilled Panini of your choice, a bowl of some Corn Chowder Soup and get to Dippin’

Now don’t let the “DING-DING” distract you from savoring your soup and sandwich. It is just the drive-thru, Yep that is right!! Call in an order if you are in a big hurry, swoop in grab your sandwich and get goin’. Here at Tony’s there aren’t any slackers behind the counter. Take a look at the above photo again, you know the one with the bad glare? Ya this one...

Drive-thru... with no overhead clearance bar... YES!! Looks like I’m going to be getting a Tony’s sub on the go in the near future. I can call in an order, and with no height restrictions I can pull my bucket truck right up to the window, grab my lunch and go... perfect

As I sat and waited for my sandwich for what seemed like a whole minute and a half, I took a look around the place. They had lots of Coca-Cola memorabilia scattered around the place.

69B4882F-1419-474E-B15B-B9C440F61445.jpeg

Plus an old gas pump in the corner to go along with a few of the MobileGas signs they had on the walls. Wait... what is that hanging out of the ceiling above the Old Gas Pump?

Halloween is just around the corner and it seems as the skeletons have made their way into Tony’s already. I had better get to chowing down on my Pastrami Swiss Sauerkraut foot long sub and a bag of some Sun chips.

AD681596-2EE4-4759-BBF4-717457B0FB52.jpeg

A thin layer of mayonnaise, mustard, lettuce, tomato, pastrami, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, salt, pepper, oil and vinegar. If you are like me, you hate a dry sandwich. You know where it feels like you are eating a loaf of dry bread?!?!? Ya, this sandwich to me had the perfect level of moisture. Just enough oil and vinegar to moisten it up but not too much to make it soggy. Hey, maybe you like a soggy sandwich?? I know I don’t, unless it is soggy from dipping it into some soup :wink:wink

I think subconsciously I tried to eat this sandwich as fast as they made it. Even though I think it could have used double the amount of meat, this sandwich hit the spot!! What can I say, I’m a carnivore and I like the meat piled high on my sandwiches. Maybe next time I will ask for double the meat and see what happens.

Welp... She Gone...

I sat there a few moment and enjoyed a few sips of my soda pop. Hang on, in Washington we call it Pop and when I was living in California they called it soda... what’s up with that??? Anyway as I say there sipping on my drink letting the footling sandwich make its way through my digestive track a bit before heading back to work. I noticed that there has been a constant flow of people walking through the doors and stopping at the drive-thru. No long line by any means, just a couple people here and a couple people there. Just enough to keep the people behind the counter busy.

D83E5AAE-6B56-4252-BC04-3E327BC57FBC.jpeg

Now I could leave without getting my Lineman hands on a couple of these home made cookies!! That would be a sin!! How could I just walk by this and not grab a couple???

AB7D6ED4-DB06-4BE7-84C8-FDAF04758C1B.gif

I’ll take...

  • 2 - White Chocolate Cranbery
  • 2 - White Chocolate Macadamia Nut
  • 2 - Chocolate Chunk
  • 2 - Triple Chocolate
  • 2 - Lemon Cooler
    To-Go Please

Now that is a bag of some soft homemade cookies!! Hey, I gotta take some home for my wife and kids right??? That would be just straight up mean to not share. Ok I did eat one and I promise I only ate one. I chose the White Chocolate Cranberry to satisfy my sweet tooth, and boy oh boy did it!!

As I left with a full belly and a satisfied sweet tooth a snapped a photo of the outside sitting area. It makes me wonder if Tony’s was actually an automobile service station back in the day. It’s has the 2 garage doors and a good size parking lot out front. I guess I am going to have to find some old time Walla Walla residents and ask them that.

One more thing before I wrap this Tasteem Local Dish Food Fight Friday One-Two punch... Just a couple blocks away is Pioneer Park, you and your significant other can grab your sandwiches and go enjoy the beautiful, relaxing scenery in the park.... How Romantic right??? Fellas, you better be taking some notes :wink:wink

If you can’t tell I didn’t really have anything negative to say about Tony’s Sub Shop. The place was clean, the sandwiches delicious, the menu had a variety of items and the cookies... to die for!!! So if you happen to be in the SouthEastern part of Washington state, stop into the place so nice they named it twice, Walla Walla and enjoy a great meal at Tony’s Sub Shop.

Until Next Time...

I thought the same thing when they stopped by, “oh, hey, this might actually work.”

Heck of a review. Like I was on a guided tour. Congratulations on the reward.

The cover, great placement of the FFF.

Funniest comedy? Dumb and dumber.. hilarious. I have a tough time saying it’s funnier than Road Trip, though. That one is so funny! With Kyle.. oh man.

Great contender, chef. Nice to see you.

Nice to see a quality tasteem! There's too many boring ones around... you gotta liven em up whilst keeping a decent review in there!

This was my first one but I am hoping to do a few more from around here. There are a few of these types of mom and pop shops around here that make some delicious food. Maybe I will do Fast Eddies next... even though when you order they aren’t so... fast. Lol

I hope I accomplished both of those with this review, entertaining and informative.
Thanks for swinging by. Cheers
