My new favourite fast food and an amazing old tree in a narrow lane, พบร้านอาหารสุดอร่อยกับต้นไม้โบราณ

Finally, after one week’s search, I found my new favourite fast food stall on a narrow lane off New Road in Bangkok. I stumbld upon this place while walking along this old road (the first road constructed in Siam over a hundred years ago) feeling very hungry for my dinner. I was attracted by the banging sound of the ladle hitting a big iron pan. This familiar sound of food being cooked at fast and ferocious speed reminded me of my grandmother’s kitchen. So, I had to investigate this secret fast food joint.

Looking from inside the narrow lane towards the main road, branches of a tall tree could be seen perching on the roof. I took this photo before the sunset but I did stay up late for my dinner as I was too hungry to walk any further!

This narrow lane runs along two rows of old shop-houses where families have been living there for at least three generations. These small houses always remind me of my Chinese grandmother’s house long time ago. This brought back childhood memory of children playing in big groups in front of old houses.

The lady vendor must be over sixty years old yet she still had to work in front of hot stove, standing there for at least six hours from late afternoon till night time. I was quite surprised by the number of customers queuing up for their take away dinners. I decided to try the fried small rice noodle with shrimps. The old lady proved to be a very skillful cook with the Cantonese style cuisine, judging by her technique of frying the noodle. The noodle had the aromatic scent of slightly burnt sesame oil which could be found only in formal Cantonese restaurants. I was very pleased to find this secret hide-away food stall. The old lady’s stamina did inspire my respect and admiration. I wish I could cook like this!

Looking around this place, I could see that most customers are local people who have been depending on this fast food place for many years. These were mostly regular customers who knew how delicious and cheap food prices were offered here. This was the second time I came to try a different menu. Incredible, this is the first Chinese food stall I know that does not put MSG in food! The cook seems very proud and confident of the quality of their good food.

I had to investigate the tall tree as it has been left to grow by the wall of the old building for well over eighty years. I wondered why people didn’t cut it down in the past. After looking around, I realised that this was a very old Bhodhi tree; the tree under which the Lord Buddha sat in meditation. Thai people consider this tree very sacred with many tree spirits and possibly some high level angels residing on top of this old tree. It would be very bad karma and a terrible act for someone to cut the sacred tree as it would also bring that person bad luck. So, the roots of this tree have been allowed to grow over the wall during these years. These roots look very impressive and stubborn.

ในที่สุดเราก็เจอร้านอาหารตามสั่งจานด่วนที่เราชอบใจมาก แบะเป็นร้านที่เราจะแวะไปซื้ออาหารกินในยามฉุกเฉิน หรือตอนไปเดินเล่นแถวท่าน้ำสะพานสาทร เราเจอร้านนี้โดยบังเอิญ เพราะเราได้ยินเสียงตะหลิวกระทบกับกะทะใบใหญ่เสียงดังมาก เราก็ตามไปดู เราเจอร้านเล็กๆอยู่ในซอยแคบๆที่ถนนเจริญกรุง ข้างในซอยมีตึกแถวเล็กๆเรียงเป็นแถว เรารู้ทันทีว่าตึกแถวนี้สร้างในสมัยรัชกาลที่5 และคนที่อยู่ที่นี่ก็คงอยู่มาอย่างน้อยสามชั่วอายุคน ทำให้เราคิดถึงบ้านคุณย่าที่หัวลำโพงสมัยก่อน เราจำได้ว่าเด็กในซอยแคบๆ แบบนี้จะพากันวิ่งเล่นทั้งวัน

คนทำอาหารวันนี้น่าจะมีอายุมากกว่าหกสิบปี เขาต้องยืนหน้าเตาไฟที่ร้อนมากและใช้กำลังผัดอาหารอย่างน้อยหกชั่วโมง ร้านนี้ออกขายอาหารตั้งแต่ตอนบ่ายไปจนดึก ลูกค้าส่วนใหญ่จะเป็นคนในท้องที่ เขารู้จักฝีมือการทำอาหารของร้านนี้กันมานานแล้ว เราแปลกใจมสดที่ร้านนี้เป็นร้านอาหารจีนแก่งแรกที่ไม่ใส่ผงชูรส ดูเจ้าของร้านจะภูมิใจและมั่นใจในคุณภาพและฝีมือการทำอาหารของเขามากทีเดียว เราก็ลองสั่งเส้นหมี่ราดหน้ากุ้งมาลอง เขาผัดเส้นหมี่ได้ดีมาก ตามตำรับของกุ๊กกวางตุ้งเลย ปกติอาหารรสชาดแบบนี้เราได้กินในร้านอาหารจีนที่มีระดับแพงมากๆ มิน่าเล่าลูกค้าประจำจึงเรืองแน่นมาก

ตรงกำแพงที่ร้านนี้ตั้งอยู่ มีต้นไม้ใหญ่โตขึ้นไปสูงมาก เราก็เดินดูและถามคนว่าเป็นต้นอะไร เราก็เลยรู้ว่าเป็นต้นโพธิ์ที่ชาวบ้านปล่อยให้โตมากว่าแปดสิบปี ไม่มีใครกล้าตัดต้นไม้เพราะกลัวบาปและโชคร้าย คนไทยจะถือเรื่องต้นโพธิ์ว่าเป็นต้นไม้ศักดิ์สิทธิ์ รากของต้นไม้แผ่ขยายจนคลุมกำแพงบ้าน ดูแล้วนรากลัวมากว่า ข้างในบ้านจะมีที่ว่างเหลืออยู่หรือเปล่า ร้านอาหารตามสั่งนี้มาช่วยให้เรามีที่พึ่งเวลาที่เรามาเดินเล่นแถวท่าน้ำสะพานสาทร อาหารอร่อยและสะอาด ราคาก็ย่อมเยาว์ บรรยากาศก็เป็นแบบสบายๆติดดินดี ไม่ต้องวางมาดเวลากินอาหารอย่างมีความสุข
