Over the weekend, I stumbled on a small plant market in a big shopping mall. I was quite surprised by the varieties of pot plants, house plants and big trees on display. Normally city people have very little space for gardening as the prices of land and houses are very high. Most people would afford some modest townhouses, second-hand shophouses, apartments and condominiums. So, small hanging plants or flowering plants are very popular as they are quite cheap and easy to look after. In this post, I would present some of the hanging orchids on display at the weekend market.

As I found out about this weekend market rather late, most of the beautiful orchids and more expensive ones were all sold out. There were ordinary orchids hanging around waiting for customers. I was quite surprised that city people were buying pot plants and orchids as if they were cheap candies. It must have been the impact of being under lockdown for too long that people felt the need to do something different to liven up their houses and daily routine.

Having to look after plants and watching the new leaf or flower to pop up could be very therapeutic and absorbing. Plants and flowers seemed to stimulate people’s energy and good mood. I could see their eyes being more focus with pointed concentration while choosing their favorite plants to bring back home. It was fun to see the whole family joining in the process of choosing plants and negotiating for price reduction with vendors.

Recently my friend told me that he bought all the seeds and cuttings from online plant nursery. He told me that we could order big fruit trees online as well. It makes me wonder that all weekend plants markets and plant nurseries could disappear in the near future. This idea brings me sadness as I would not be able to walk around plant nurseries, spending time looking,inspecting and comparing all the plants. The surprise finds of new hanging plants or pot plants would be gone too! When buying plants online, you would not get the chance to pick out the specific plants you would like.

I could not imagine that the enjoyment of shopping for fruit trees and pot plants would all disappear one day. Life ‘s precious moments with friends and families at weekend markets and plant nurseries would become a legend in the digital era. I wonder if virtual reality interfaces could replace our sense perceptions of colours and fragrance of a flowering plant or the touching of beautiful leaves. I do hope it would take at least a hundred years before everything has become digitised and assimilated into virtual reality.

สุดสัปดาห์ที่ผ่านมาเราเดินไปเจอ งานตลาดนัดขายต้นไม้โดยบังเอิญที่ห้างสรรพสินค้า เราไปถึงตอนตลาดเริ่มจะวายแล้ว พวกต้นไม้สวยๆและดอกไม้งามๆที่มีราคาแพงถูกขายไปเกือบหมดแล้ว เราสนุกกับการเดินดูต้นไม้ทั้งแบบไม้กระถาง ต้นไม้แขวน และต้นไม้ขนาดใหญ่สูงกว่าสองเมตรหลายสิบต้น เราแอบดูคนทั้งครอบครัวช่วยกันเลือกต้นไม้ และช่วยกันต่อราคาคนขายแล้ว เราอดขำไม่ได้ว่าต้นไม้ช่วยทำให้ทุกคนในครอบครัวมีความกลมเกลียวดีมาก สายตาของคนที่กำลังเลือกหาต้นไม้โปรดของตนเอง ก็ดูมีจุดมุ่งหมายและพลังอย่างประหลาด ต่างคนต่างจองต้นไม้ยองตนเองก่อนที่คนอท่นจะมาเลือกไป เราคิดว่าการที่คนถูกกักบริเวณเป็นเวลานานมาก ทำให้เขาอยากทำอะไรใหม่ๆในชีวิตและที่บ้านของตนเอง ทำให้มีพลังใหม่ๆเกิดขึ้นในชีวิตด้วย

ในที่นี้เราแสดงแต่รูปถาพของดอกกล้วยไม้ที่เหลือในงาน คนเมืองพอเห็นกล้วยไม้สีสดใสในราคาพอสมควร ก็อดไม่ได้ที่ต้องเอาไปแขวนดูเล่นที่บ้าน การได้ดูแลต้นไม้ รดน้ำและคอยดูการเจริญเติบโตของการผลิดอกออกใบ ทำให้ผ่อนคลายและเพลินมาก เป็นการช่วยลดความเครียดได้ดีมาก แต่เพื่อนเราบอกว่าเดี๋ยวนี้เขาสั่งซื้อเมล็ดพันธ์ุและต้นไม้ทางออนไลน์แล้ว เราก็อดคิดไม่ได้ว่า ต่อไปตลาดนัดและร้านขายต้นไม้ร้านเล็กๆ ที่เราชอบไปเดินเล่นดูต้นไม้คงจะหายไปหมด จะเหลือแต่เรื่องเล่าในอดีต เราก็หวังว่าคนต้องใช้เวลาอีกร้อยปีกว่าๆ ที่จะทำให้ทุกอย่างเป็นดิจิตอล และมนุษย์กลายเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของโลกดิจิตอลหรือความจริงเสมือน มนุษย์คงไม่ต่างจากหุ่นยนต์นักในโลกอนาคต
