After several years of being oppressed and forced onto 'temporary' reservations, the Lakota people had reached their limit. 4 young warriors frustrated from an unsuccessful hunting trip decided to pilfer some eggs from a farm on land which they once roamed free. This led to an all out war for the territory in Minnesota (now called Mankato) which the white people won, killing a quarter of the remaining tribe. Though president Lincoln was trying to free the 'slaves' in the south, he cared none for the original freemen of the continent and held the same posture as Andrew Jackson - that the Native Americans were nothing more than savages. I often wonder what the world would be like today if we were all the same color and spoke the same tongue.

Having maternal grandparents, that were both Cherokee, this is something close to my heart...

I have no idea what makes any race/religion/gender feel superior to another. I raised my kids to be colorblind and they were. They would describe an oriental person as "the lady with the red hat" or another as the boy with the yellow shirt... as it should be.
Why is that so hard?
Honestly? I believe it is what's called 'learned behavior' and until it stops getting taught to our youth every generation - especially by separatist movements like BLM and Antifa garbage this time around, it won't disappear. Good on you for teaching that all colors are beautiful.
Odd factoid from the Lakota uprising: when the Lakota all but leveled the town of New Ulm, they left August Schellās brewery, house, and family untouched. The reason was that over the prior few years, Schell had treated the local Lakota decently, as fellow humans.
