Un momento para mirar la historia/a moment to look at the story
The Nueva Esparta state, in Venezuela, is an archipelago formed by three islands: Margarita, Coche and Cubagua. The capital of the state is La Asunción, a town located west of the island, which sits between the vegetation of the spacious and fertile Santa Lucia Valley. This city was founded in 1562 and became a strategic center, both in the economy and in colonial politics. For these characteristics it was scene of libertarian struggles, as well as harassment of pirates and privateers.
The Assumption is a peaceful and serene place; Its cool climate gives the city a hospitable atmosphere. This is particularly palpable in its Plaza Bolívar, where the commercial activity takes place, while it is the site that shows the historical burden of the area. From there you can access, for example, one of the most important buildings in the place: the cathedral of La Asunción.
This Church began to be built in 1571. It is the second oldest church in Venezuela and one of the first in Latin America, so it is considered one of the invaluable architectural jewels of the country.
In the year 1602 it undergoes a great devastation due to the attack of the French privateers, but eight years later its reconstruction begins, that finishes in 1621.
Who observes this beautiful cathedral today will see it marked by the patina of time that accentuates its solid character, evident on the outside of its thick walls, and its sober appearance, free of elaborate ornaments. Its lines are straight and simple. It has a gable roof. The front is formed by a semicircular arch that rests on two columns. His frontis has a skylight.
The beautiful bell tower of the temple is located on its left side. It was completed at the end of the 16th century. From its square structure, the bells that mark the most important events in the area have been thrown into the wind for more than four centuries.
I could not cause more than a deep emotion to admire this majestic colonial building, which has justly been declared historical heritage of Venezuelans.
Inside the sanctuary two colonnades divide its three ships. There we admire the high ceilings, the beautiful carvings. It is clearly notorious the love hand of the Assuntines in the care of this fundamental part of their lives.
The sober character of the exterior is also present inside, with the warmth provided by the wooden bench and the old Main Altar that continues to invite, from the colony, the belief in an angelic world.
