An Artist's Life On The Road, Some Of My Nomadic Activities Around Europe

avatar
(Edited)

As some of you might have realized, I am spending most of my life on the road in a bus.
Travelling is essential for my photography, but also for my psychological well-being. But
after weeks on the road, all by myself, I wish for some company/exchange/audience.

That's why I tapped into the artists' networks, and found places I can arrive at,
people and institutions that are interested in my work and philosophy, and a
way to pause the lonelyness that is a big part of being on the road.

In exchange for this wonderful meetings and invitations I offer exhibitions, performances
and talks. Usually followed by a huge meal and some interesting discussions.

So here you can see how that can look:

cuges.jpg
Cuges, France

Cuges in French means as much as the arse of nowhere. And that's exactly how/what it is;
typically french in their ignorance (sorry french people, I know it's not everyone), chaotic
when it comes to organizing anything, and all that with an attitude of superiority.
I still enjoyed spending a day at that bus station. Besides showing my work and talking
about my life, I alsoo issued ID-cards. People could choose their identity, and were very
happy to do so.

p.s. I obviously didn't like Cuges very much, but still met some fantastic people there!

talk.jpg
Granada, Spain

I was invited to take part in multiple activities in and around the city of Granada. During
those days I gave two talks to the students of the art academy. As usual I found out
that exchange and discussion is much more interesting than talking.

BlackHole.JPG
Eisenerz, Austria

The Black Hole has been travelling with me extensively; a former field-darkroom for
the german military, it is not only a great darkroom, but also a nice black hole to put
things inside.

GN01.jpg
Roadside, Austrian Village

This is one of my favorite settings; being unknown to the village, in the beginning secepticism
towards me is usually big. But then curiositiy gets the better of people, and after the first
dares to come, the others usually are not that far behind.

esterhazy.jpg
Eisenstadt, Austria

A prestigious location that was! Following an invitation by the aristocrats Esterhazy, I set
up in front of the former stables of their castle. Unfortunately the crowd was one of that
typically unintersted week-enders, that, despite having a day off, always seem to be in a hurry.

France01.jpg
Somewhere, France

This was an amazing exhibition. I was supported by the local townhall, and they did a
great job; lots of visitors, help with translation and open curiosity. This made me really happy!

UK.JPG
Somewhere, United Kingdom

The UK is very special! Sometimes it can come across very weird, dis-honest and kitschy,
but I like that. Besides this, Brits are very open and educated about arts, even though their
emphasis on art as social labour goes a bit too far!

I am posting this not only to share my experiences, but to
inspire others to go out there and find their own!

So out you go!

This is really amazing and risky undertaking! Luckily you didn’t encounter robbers or criminal minded people!

In some places, you would have to guard your belongings very well! In other places, your life might be in danger!!

Incredible journey of an artist whom seemed to be living in a time capsule! You are so brave and have a very strong mind! And your guardian angels must be looking after you!

Good luck!

You are absolutely right about my guardian angels and bravery ;)
In general I discovered that there are very few 'dabgerous' places, and those are not where you woud expect them. E.g. things were never stolen from me in Romania, although our 'propaganda' tells us it's a dangerous country. But I was seriously robbed in the UK...
In general I am easy, and I don't even lock my bus...
