Boka Waterfall, Slovenia

avatar

I should have believed the photography guide when I read that the path to the highest Waterfall in Slovenia is very steep.

Boka Waterfall
Slap Boka, Bovec, Slovenia

This waterfall is actually very easy to find, because you can see it from the road.
Driving further south from Bovec, you come to a large concrete bridge over the Boka River. In front of this bridge is a gravel parking lot on the left.
Parking is free and there is no entrance fee for the hike to the waterfall. From this car park go over the bridge and then turn right. From the bridge you can already see the mighty waterfall.

Immediately after the bridge turn right onto the trail. Up to the viewing platform, you can walk on a gravel path and over steps for some height meters through the forest and reach the wooden platform after about 20 to 30 minutes.

From the small platform you can see the waterfall as well as the course of the Boka River. Until then, the short hike is certainly no problem for children or older people.

If you want to get closer to the waterfall, you can either walk along the river, what might be a wet walk somehow, depending on the water the river carries, or you can hike from the platform further up the path.
The path leads steeply up along the ravine, as described in the photography guide. Along the way there are several nice places where you can rest and also see the waterfall and take pictures.
If you reach an abandoned mountain pasture after about 45 minutes, the path runs to the right along the slope to the lookout point. Extreme caution is necessary there, because the abyss goes down vertically.

There is another path that runs slightly away from the gorge through the forest and which I took, because I did not pay attention at some place or junction and went left instead of right. This path goes partly very steep straight upwards through the forest and I reached the observation place above the waterfall after about one hour sweaty. I could not find that path on any map, but it was definitely a path.

From this place, which is higher than the waterfall, you have a very good view on the waterfall to the source of the Boka River, which is about 30 meters behind the waterfall, and you have also a wonderful view of the area of Bovec and the Soča Valley.

Back down I went the correct path, where I then found the previously mentioned lookouts.

I posted a photo of the waterfall with the rainbow a few days ago. Here's another one.

❖ click the image for fullsize view ❖

About the height of this waterfall, which is considered the highest in Slovenia, I have read different information on various websites, but all agreed that it is the highest waterfall in Slovenia with a total of 136 meters (106 + 30 meters).

Conclusion:
The Boka Waterfall is really impressive. I will visit him again after the winter, when there is more water because of the snowmelt.
The walk to the observation deck is a nice walk for the whole family, but I would not recommend the steep path to the upper viewpoint for families with small children or people with walking difficulties.

Fazit:

I'm happy that you commented on my recent post so that I was able to follow you back to this beautiful post. I'd LOVE to take that hike up to the beautiful waterfall and breathtaking view. This is my favorite kind of outdoor hiking experience. Living in the Midwest USA doesn't lend itself to such wonders, but we do have an area about 100 miles away called Garden of the Gods that we hope to get to again soon and get some beautiful fall foliage photos of the unique rock formations.

I am happy that you found me and that you like my post too 🙂
Of course, I had to do a quick Google search for this Garden of Gods, and I think it is a beautiful area - I like these rock formations. We don't have such here. I hope for you, that you have a chance to get there.
So, I thank you also for stopping by and wish you a great weekend, @blueeyes8960 🙂

Yes, you are right, the Yosemite waterfalls look somehow similar, but I think you wouldn't notice this one if you put it besides the much higher Yosemite Falls ;)
Thank you so much for your nice comment, @monotharch 🙂

Amazing views, beautifully photographed.

@johannpiber your detailed description of this hike will be very helpful for anyone who wants to visit Boka waterfall.

All the photos from this trip are great, but my favourite are the one with amazing rainbow and one of river in the valley between the mountains.

Oh no, it was not meant this way. I just thought, that it might only be useful for you when you make some kind of a travel related post, like a little (tourist) guide at your photo spots in NY or at the beach. I didn't want to use the word "tourist", because we don't want tourists at our best photo spots, but I think you don't care much about them in New York ;)

I knew what you meant and even in NY I try and avoid times when tourists are out and about

I have noticed that most tourists sleep quite long, because I try to get to my waterfalls and the other places very early in the morning, and it is very seldom, that I see other people. Mostly when I go back to my car I meet them, and that's good 🙂

Yes I have found that as well I used to love that when I was traveling could do the more touristy spots early morning when it was quiet and then explore the less touristy spots and get a real for the place during the day

You get soft and warm photos. Is it due to processing or is it the features of the camera and lenses ?

Nature is beautiful, I love mountains, but ... I don’t visit them. I live out of the blue. I really like the picture of a valley with mountains and fog. And of course the waterfall is beautiful. It turns out that everything is beautiful :D

St. Petersburg. There are small rocks in Karelia, but these are not the mountains. Maybe someday I will be able to visit the Alps. There is one problem, the wife is afraid of heights and is afraid to let me go alone))) We were in the mountains of Abkhazia, but only in the lower part of them)))

0

Yes, I have seen it before on Google maps - the next real mountains are quite far away. You should take your wife with you when you visit the alps or other mountains. I have a friend, who dies not even step on y small ladder, but she has been with us on a mountain a few times. As long as she doesn't go too close to the abyss, she has no problem on the mountains ;)

My wife has the same. But how to climb a mountain and never once be the edge of the heights. She is even afraid in the car to drive along the serpentine. I couldn’t lure her to Lake Ritz in Abkhazia. Although there is not very high. But there is a road with a section of serpentine ... stupor... :-))))

0

Okay, then it might not be very easy with her in the alps, because we have many serpentines - maybe you should blindfold her, so that she cannot see where you are going 🙂
