Early Fall Travels to Bend

avatar

My trips to Bend are usually for the mundane purpose of shopping, Costco/Safeway and such. Every so often though I do go just for the fun of it and to explore. :) There is a myriad of things to do in and around Bend, but today I will be concentrating on a couple early fall trips I have taken over the last couple years.

Drake Park Downtown Area

These first photos are from a visit in early October of last year. I decided to take a walk around Drake Park that is on the banks of The Deschutes River that runs through the heart of Bend.

This first image is the backside of the town that borders the park. Some very colorful buildings here.

From the edge of the park you can see the Deschutes River and the houses on the opposite bank. This part of the river has a small dam on it and the resulting calm water is called Mirror Pond. Aptly named I say. :) Also, Mirror Pond is one of the beers made at the nearby Deschutes Brewery.

Another shot across Mirror Pond to the houses that line the opposite shore.

A shot of the various species of trees beginning to make their change.

Berries galore! I have no idea what they are but they are definitely abundant. :)

North End of the Old Mill District

These are from the first couple days of fall this year.

Even though fall has just arrived you can see some of the trees are already beginning their change. In the distance you can see two of The Three Sisters peaks in the Cascade Mountain Range.

More colors along the road.

So even though it is technically a fall day it is still warm enough to do a little river surfing. :)

A Trip to the Bend Fall Festival

This first shot is from the drive from my house into Bend. A stop to get a pano of some of the peaks in the Cascades.

A shot down one of the main streets that was closed down for the festival.

A look at the main stage where there are groups playing music all day into the night.

A shot of the old Tower Theater.

And here is a shot (taken by AW10. ?) of the same area from the 1940's. Photo hanging in McMenamins, Bend.

And finally what festival would be complete without a cold Mirror Pond from Brother John's. :)

Photos taken by me with a Nikon D3300 and CPL filter with some Lightroom post processing.

Thanks for looking and enjoy your day!

I just happen to see that old photo as I was walking around McMenamins. They have a lot of eclectic stuff decorating their establishment. I really need to make a post solely about them. :)

The mountain view is from a viewpoint on HWY 20 about halfway between Bend and Sisters.

Thanks for stopping by. :)

Wow, those are some sweet photos! Love all the natural colors, including your steel-blue sky. Last year around this time I was taking a bicycle trip down the coast from Canada to Mexico, though we went inland quite a bit. We were debating if we should go through Bend, as it came highly recommended, but then we ended up doing Eugene, and rolling south from there to California. Which means, I still need to go and see Bend! Maybe on the next trip.

Thank you!

Wow, that sounds like quite the ride! Unfortunately I have kind of fallen out of my riding habit, something I need to correct. :)

Central Oregon does have some beautiful scenery. If you are ever in the area you should check out McKenzie pass HWY 242 that runs out of Sisters OR and will take you all the way to Eugene (about 100 miles). Here is a link to some more info about the pass part of the ride. For me it would be about a 25 mile round trip and is still on my list. Just need to get into some riding shape for the 2000 foot elevation gain going up. :)

Wow, you're getting my mouth wet for my next ride! Yeah, I feel I haven't been in the saddle for ever! 2000 foot gain? That sounds like the 3200 climb from Takilma, OR over the Grayback mountain into the Klamath valley in California. Or also the 2600 gain coming out of there over Bald Hill Road! Believe it or not, in the end it was these climbs that I look so fondly back on!
