This painting of a munk in his cell was a favorite and the place next to it was his actual cell, and it gave an idea how small space they had!

IMG_20191119_160626-01.jpeg

The Reformation!

When Martin Luther wrote his chronics in 1517,
he started a reformation of the Christian church.
One result was that the monasteries in north were closed.
At the end of the 1520s the danish brothers were forced to leave their monastery.
They were acused of not preaching in a proper way.
Mabye this was because the friar brothers and Lutheranerna were approatching the same audience!

IMG_20191119_160604-01.jpeg

Martin Luther!

On 31 october 1517
Augustinian friar Martin Luther
presented his theses about indulgence in the german town of Wittenberg.
He did not think it was right that one could sell documents giving People forgiveness of sins.
Thanks to the printing press,
the translaced texts could be quickly spread all over Europe.
These theses divided the catholic church,
much of which was reformed.
Kings and Princes were also pushing,
to gain access to the wealth and power
of the church!

IMG_20191119_160527-01.jpeg

The Expolsion!

The Lutherans in Ystad had tried
to get rid of the friars in 1531, but not succeeded then.
They wrote a letter of complains to
King Frederik. I
asking for his support.
The King answered the letter 16 march 1532.
He granted the town the right to take over the monastery buildings, and the church on the day the friars moved out.
The monastery would then be used as a hospital,
and the church as a parish church.
It is not certain whether that letter had reached Ystad by 24 march the same year.
But on that day the Lutherans and their mayor Hans Hjort entered the monastery,
they demanded the Keys.
When the Guardians asked to see papers provning that the King had ordered this,
the citizens showed him a document without a seal.
The gurardian did not belive that it was a real order from the King.
The friars were terrified and hid in their cells,
but they were pulled out by force and were never allowed to come back again.
This was done with such violance that 3 of them died a few days later,
and the guardian was imprisoned for 8 weeks.
The friars were not allowed to take anything with them from the monastery.
Some of them moved to other french monastery in Europe.
There has been a Lutheran congregation in Ystad since the 1520s.
The Lutheran priest Mr. Jacob from Ystad,
is mentioned in a document from 1530.
The city seems to have been divided into a Catholic and a Lutheran congregation in the early 1530s.
There were also 2 mayors at that time.

Wow! So many pictures! I love the feel of old places like that, like you're walking through history. The crown distillery was interesting... I might've pulled a name or two from that to use in my book. Maybe I should work a version of your name in there, too. ;) I've got a HUGE cast of characters in this new book I'm writing, and a massive castle, too! Bet I could use some of these photos as inspiration for descriptions. Thanks for sharing!

I can already imagine what typical daily life is like living a simple routine of a devotional and spiritual service but not without it's complex politics as well. You know me, I enjoy this kind of real history, I'd love to visit places like this, even in my imagination on fictional basis as a the character Sister Teresa D'Mordecai of the St. Angleasta convent in 1811 Mexico. Three chapters in already.

I really like history and that is neat that you have a museum in your hometown.

My birth-mother's side of the family are Scandinavian (Norwegian), so I find this very interesting. My great-grandfather emigrated here from Western Norway in 1902.

Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful collection of photographs from the monastery in your home-town, on the #PYPT Show.
