The night was chilly but sweat trickled down her forehead. Why did she leave her phone downstairs?!! All she wanted to do was to get a book from her room but she decided to take a quick nap instead, until she was rudely awakened by a glass shattering noise downstairs.

She was so scared; her heart was beating loud enough for the intruders to hear it, even though she was hidden under all those covers. She tried to calm herself, make her breath quieter so it would not give her location away.
Her mind searched for her salvation. She was stuck on the second floor with no way to escape, and they were on their way up the stairs!


Suddenly she remembered, there was a ladder outside her window. The plumber left it there the other day after fixing the rooftop leakage. Should she take the risk and dash for it or stay where she was? Clock was ticking fast as she heard the creaking sounds of the stairs.

This is my entry to @cindyhartz who gave a base story as follows in her October Better Than Fair to Middlin’ Contest:

Story Base
