# 956 - Canadian Wildlife - Part 41

avatar

Today we will continue the series called "Canadian Wildlife".

The Royal Canadian Mint is known by its high quality work and the enormous number of commemorative coins issued each year. Among these commemoratives we find many, individual or in series, under the theme "wildlife".

Canada, with its vast lands and seas, is the home of a varied fauna and that will be showed in this series.

I will try to post land animals, sea animals and birds, in that order.

The forty first is a 2002 CAD $5 "Flying Loon".

To celebrate the 15th Anniversary of the Loon dollar coin in Canada, the Royal Canadian Mint has released a special edition hologram loon, with a $5 face value, and struck on a 1oz silver maple leaf planchet, with 99.99% silver purity. Its mintage was 29,970 units.

Loons are a group of aquatic birds found in many parts of North America and northern Eurasia.
The common loon (Gavia immer) is a large member of the loon family of birds.
Loons, which are the size of a large duck or a small goose, resemble these birds in shape when swimming.

The common loon is the provincial bird of Ontario, and it appears on Canadian currency, including the one-dollar "loonie" coin and a previous series of CAD $20 bills.

I got the common circulating $1 Loon in my Kid's coin collection but this silver one is much better.

Holograms make the coins much more appealing.

Looks like a happy bird @ronavel!!! I remember when we first moved up near the Canadian border and someone told me they have a "looney", on the $1.00....

A nicely done coin. I like the look of the hologram with it. Thanks for sharing!

It is very difficult to take a good photo of a hologram. The coin is much more beautiful when you look at it...
