When Mistakes Happen

avatar

Hello there again! I guess this will be my last entry for @utopian-io. It has been a pleasure working with @elear and his team. I wish him and the company good luck in their future endeavors.

In this post, I would like to touch bases on handling mistakes. As one of the admins for @steemflagrewards (SFR), I review the flags cast by our colleagues. One of the most challenging aspect of anti-abuse initiatives is efficiency. In this case, let efficiency equals to speed and accuracy. We will leave other factors out for another time.

Speed and accuracy can go hand in hand as initiatives try to improve their processes. In reality, in a given workflow, they sometimes have an inverse correlation. If they go for one, the other suffers.

What happens when a mistake occurs? I would like to showcase a few examples and their resolutions.

Example 1:

Here, the author in question received flags for bid bot abuse and plagiarism. This post was in Trending when reported to SFR. There was a problem, there was no plagiarism when we found out the images used were from Pixabay.

Unfortunately, the initial flag contained plagiarism as a keyword. All the following flags then displayed the same claim based on the Flag Trail algorithm. I, for one, am glad SFR no longer uses the repetitive "follow-on" flags when downvoting abuse. It is much cleaner, less bloat, and avoid showing the wrong information multiple times.

training2.png

Although the post still fits into SFR's scope of abuse, it was not plagiarism. This was my statement on the matter.

training 3.png

What changed to prevent future incidents?

  • Elimination of follow-on flags - would only need to modify two comments: the downvoter and the bot.
  • Automatic approval follow-on instances - mods used to have to approve them one by one.
  • Less time spent on approval - allowed mods to feel less pressured to get through everything. Pressure opens up opportunities where mods are not spending time to verify claims.

Example 2:

Sometimes, it is difficult to judge someone's micro blogging. Especially, when they seem to be on a curation trail. When the owner of the account complained, the mods and admins at SFR gathered to discuss the case.

In the end, we concluded that the Steemian in question was not milking Trevon's curation trail. We also compensated them for the downvotes we cast on their posts. Since it was not possible to reverse the downvotes, I felt that was the most logical approach.

training 4.png

What changed to prevent future incidents?

  • Bring the posts in question to discussion in SFR Discord - everyone is free to downvote what they want. But, there needs to be some consensus on when to use our resources.

Mistakes can happen, but they also serve as tools to help us improve our workflow. In the case of @steemflagrewards, we do not shy away from our shortcomings, but find ways to rise above them.

Our scopes are not rigid as the ecosystem evolves. If others have great ideas on how to enhance the operation, we listen. We are not here to eradicate abuse, but to mitigate them. The community needs to step up to protect their vested interests like the Tribes are doing.

For every case where folks say we are not paying attention to, there is a genuine limit on time and resources. We encourage everyone who wants to see something done contribute to the cause. Or, they can brainstorm ways to make things better.

Remember, anti-abuse is not the solution to a problem. Anti-abuse is the band-aid that stops the bleeding until you fix the problem. It is there to buy time before things get out of hand.

That's for now. I will still be writing. Take care, everyone!

Abuse Series will continue irregardless what happens to Utopian-io.

While I approve of many of your downvotes, I really dislike the language and spirit that gets used.

I fear the whole tone adds to the fear of downvotes and reinforces the idea that Downvotes are punitive in nature and not just an act of expressing our influence via stake.

I get that. It is also hard not for people to view it as "punitive" as money is involved. I don't know if it's possible for people to overcome the hurdle of "pending payout".

But yes, if you do have suggestions for tones/language, please let us know. For example, instead of saying, say... stuff can be really helpful.

Better wording is nice. But let's not kid ourselves. As long as there is monetary value at stake it will always feel punitive.

I think if lot's of people use them a lot of the time without being threatening, demonizing the receiver and acting like mini bullies much of the DV stigma would go away.

I am not saying that this group created the problem, but how we all talk about it matters. :)

I understand what you mean.
I don't think a reeducation program will increase onboarding.
Loss feels worse than gain. That's a very deep emotion.

Just understand the message you are sending.
Ofcourse it is justified in many cases.
Reckless downvoting for the lulz will be toxic.
It is a sharp weapon because there is a monetary value attached.

I'm aware that you are a reasonable user of downvotes. :)

Instead of saying Bidbot Abuse,

Using our combined stake to reduce the value of this post.

Disagreement on Rewards.

In our opinion, you have over rewarded this post via use of the bidbots. :)

Perhaps you were overzealous on your bids for votes.

LOL, you should do a funny post contest asking for fun ways to word it. :)

Just a subtle change of tone is enough in my opinion, but don't stop what you are doing.

We are in the process of reviewing our scopes and definitions.

So, your input is much appreciated.

There are plenty of blatant cases of abuse where votes are bought for junk posts. I don't think many would argue with those. For others the case has to be made. Those adding their downvotes may not have the go time to look more deeply.

This post was really well done. Hemingway only had one yellow section. Stan would be proud. 😅

You hit on some very important issues here. As we are mostly human at SFR, mistakes can and do happen. It's what we do after the fact that is critical.

We own up to it and try to make it right.

I understand there are various perspectives amongst us so it is important that we operate within the realm of consensus.

Besides Discord, we can also get a feel for consensus on chain. Maybe run polls on issues etc. I know we have discussed this in the past but pretty sure we are all pretty tapped out trying to manage our lives and endeavors which extend beyond SFR.

I like to fantasize about an SFR that is fully autonomous and I never have to restart one of those bots again, or deal with drama, or work diplomacy, or prep for imminent hard forks and stuff... But I've come to terms that dream seems to be as elusive as a unicorn. I digress.

The point of communities stepping up and dealing with abuse is vital. I think for too long users have assumed that "Oh @steemcleaners or those other flag losers will take of that" and become complacent. I think things got much better in what I would like to call the "Golden Age of AntiAbuse" which was ushered in by @utopian-io in my humble opinion.

Now, we are in the precipice of uncertainty with the fork and Utopian ceasing operations. Not sure which way things are going to go but I don't think users not in the "flag camp" should get too cozy. Not saying SFR is going away but, without development sponsors, it will be hard for me to justify what I do.

I gotta say I positively love our community and don't think I won't continue to volunteer my time... But the question becomes how much is reasonable.

In the end, we all want financial security for our families so, if working antiabuse isn't the best provider of that for our time, we need to figure what is.

Sure most of us would be glad to continue the fight on Steem as it's been our home for so long. I will do what I can (submit a delegation app and hope for the best) to continue operations in a manner that is mutually beneficial to all parties involved.... Well except the token manipulators.

They can go pack sand for all I care.

I think communities have stepped up since the introduction of SCOTs. Serious communities put down and enforce their rules.

We can hope for the best for SFR. But, the most valuable thing it has done is gather likeminded individuals who actually care about their investments here on the chain.

These communities suck, you are the prime example why! One day u just ganged up with the other bullies and flagged me out of the blue! You are a bad enforcer48!😳

hey, can you tell me why you are downvoting me ? I did something wrong ? Please let me know what's that and I will not do that again.

Sorry, @whatsup's upvote accidentally gave you some STEM. I removed it.

Since delegation is not enabled on that tribe, it becomes a bit messy when we downvote.

Dear @enforcer48

I can hardly imagine how frustrated and dissapointed you must feel :(

Unfortunatelly in current days people focus on scaling so badly, that they do not care so much about lack of customer service and poor communication with clients/users.

Yours
Piotr
