Vedic Maths Tutorial 4!

Hello fellow Steemians! Today we will learn about addition of a list of numbers. Traditionally, we learnt that while adding list of numbers, we need to start from top and then go down the list. But according to vedic mathematics, we must start from the bottom most number and move up the list.

Let’s see a very simple example of adding a list of numbers. For ease, we will start with a list of single digit numbers.

4
5
9
3
+8

We work as follows:

Step 1: 3+8 = 11
Since this is a carry over, just mark a – next to 3 and keep the units digit of answer in the mind, i.e. 1.

Step 2: We add the above answer to the next digit in the list i.e. 9
1+9 = 10
This is again a carry over, so we mark a – next to 9 and keep the units digit of answer in mind i.e. 0

Step 3: 0 + 5 = 5 (taking 0 from previous answer)
Now since this is not a carry over, we do not put any dash.

Step 4: 5+4 = 9 ((taking 5 from previous answer)
So now the answer becomes 29

Units place = 9 (units digit of the last sum)
Ones place = 2 (Number of – put throughout the addition process)

Let’s take another example

9
8
7
6
5
+4

Step 1: 4+5 = 9

Step 2: 9+6 = 15 (Put a – next to 5)

Step 3: 5+7 = 12 (Put a – next to 6)

Step 4: 2+8 = 10 (Put a – next to 8)

Step 5: 0+9 = 9

So the answer becomes 39

Units place = 9 (units digit of the last sum)
Ones place = 3 (Number of – put throughout the addition process)
So as we all can see, this technique is extremely simple and very less time taking. You would find it even more useful when you do summation of a list of numbers with multiple digits. We will learn those in further tutorials.

Now practice this with multiple sums until you can get the answers within 2 seconds.

3 6 5 4 2 7 6 8 2 1 2 1 5
9 5 3 5 6 7 8 9 5 2 5 7 9
7 4 9 8 7 6 5 4 2 3 9 5 6
4 0 7 9 6 3 5 9 2 5 7 8 7
+2 +9 +8 +7 +6 +5 +4 +3 +2 +1 +8 +5 +6
