Wednesday Walk

Admittedly, this isn't the beach I was on this week. I had to use a little clickbait so perhaps you would want to look at the post. I feared that nothing I had would lure you in. We have to use all the encouragement we have nowadays. This post is dedicated to #BeachWednesdy by @Uwelang. I dare you to give me a little bit of beach today! While we are at it, we are going to do our #WedensdayWalk with @Tattoodjay. You can check out his post here. It is a great day to go to the beach!! Who's in? All you have to do is raise your hand!

"The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it"

Wednesday Walk.JPG

This flower is dedicated to #WednesdayYellow #ColorChallenge by @Kalemandra, who happens to color my world every day. Oh for the beauty of their delicate nature. Happy Wednesday!

I wanted to take you back to Newport, Rhode Island again. One of my favorite little haunts in life. The atmosphere is laid back, in the most yuppy of ways, parting only to admit the advent of the tourist industry. It hasn't changed much since I first came as a little kid, I can recognize most of the buildings in town, only the outskirts seem a little updated. That is so New England. But, I love it. It pains me to see so many places in the USA tearing down the old to make room for the new.

I love classic shake houses of New England. While many people use the terms interchangeably, shingles and shakes are not the same. Here’s the Cedar Shake & Shingle Bureau description: “Generally, a shingle is sawn on both sides and is thinner at the butt than a shake. A shake is typically split on one or both sides. … Shakes are still manufactured by hand, but most are now made using powered equipment. Being sawn, shingles exhibit some cross-grain due to cutting, whereas shakes, being split, follow the grain more closely. For the same reason, shingles are more uniform than shakes. source

Walking through town, there are bistros and cafes, all the things that make it genteel and most welcoming. I inhale the bouquet as I wander about, a mix of salt life and freshly brewed coffee. How can we spell perfection?

20180626_134013.jpg

Or maybe this is my season
Perchance
Leaving the irrational longing behind
Welcoming the feeling instead

20180626_130804.jpg

Leaning on the doorway, the entrance for which

Waiting for my heart to separate
Reality from not

20180626_130723.jpg

What is not to love? The wave of salt air hits me and pulls me forward to another day of stay. I am addicted to the way of life here and will eventually make it my own once again.

20180626_085822.jpg

I walk along, wondering to myself about that man that lives, sans his ex-wife in the house on the rock. I can only imagine how much fun that would be, watching the water traffic go by. .

Thank you for visiting my post 💖 Because of you, I come back to post again and again. Don't ever forget what a wonderful world we live in, people. Let's hold hands around the globe and make this earth really spin. Some days, it is not as easy to see, how wonderful it really is. Kindness counts. Wherever you go, whatever you do. Cheers!!

I always post this poem down at the bottom of my posts. It is one that has become so near and dear to my heart. I only post the most famous part of it, but, wanted to post it in its entirety today.

they set my aunts house on fire
i cried the way women on tv do
folding at the middle
like a five pound note.
i called the boy who use to love me
tried to ‘okay’ my voice
i said hello
he said warsan, what’s wrong, what’s happened?

i’ve been praying,
and these are what my prayers look like;
dear god
i come from two countries
one is thirsty
the other is on fire
both need water.

later that night
i held an atlas in my lap
ran my fingers across the whole world
and whispered,
"where does it hurt?"
it answered,

"everywhere"
"everywhere"
"everywhere"

clickbait! Clickbait! LOL!

I can only imagine what that hermit living on that rock must feel and think. Does someone actually live there?

I love New England too. I've been up that way several times and have never left without wanting to stay. It's beautiful up there.

Thanks for sharing! That's a nice escape for the day.

Hahahah! OMG! Yes!!! Did you bite on it!???

To be fair, I have been to that beach, but, it is in Bermuda. Oh, that poor hermit. I often wonder what he is thinking and if it is as much fun for him now that his wife left him (ex-wife,it has been a while) She probably got tired of living in the house! Wouldn't you say? I know I would. It certainly doesn't look conducive to having a garden or much landscaping.

I just need to boat in a little closer. :)

I am from Connecticut and so New England is near and dear to me. It is always beautiful! Glad I could bring you along!! :) Have a great evening!

Would you believe I have not visited Newport yet but I will one day especially after this post showing it’s charm and beauty
I didn’t know what shakes were now I do and the difference from shingles I wonder how long my brain will keep that stored lol 😂

I actually can almost not believe that you have not visited Newport yet because it's only hours from where you live. Or maybe I say that because my mom had family there and we spent a lot of time their growing up. It really is a very Charming place and has a genteel feel to it. Lulu and you would have so much fun there and the food is amazing. But of course it's always amazing on the water.

Thank you for visiting my Wednesday walk and of course I hope you have a most wonderful night.

Thanks for being such a great guide for #SteemUSA!

Yeah with Lulu not well I dont like going to far afield as well at the moment but maybe when we are closer to Mark Jeanne and the grandkids things will change I keep hoping Lulu will get better and want to go exploring as well like we used to

Ohh yeah its getting like a ghost town in so many ways :(

I am sure once she gets resettled, it will be easier for her to concentrate on herself. Stress can play a major role in her not getting better quicker. I have a feeling moving close to Mark and Jeanne is really going to help a lot.

IWell there's no fooling you! That is actually in Bermuda and this one of my most favorite beaches to go to. I'm actually from Connecticut and my mother has relatives all over Rhode Island so we spent a lot of time there. It's beautiful, it's artsy and it's one of the places that I like to peruse. Thank you so much for stopping by and say hello!

Now that’s a place I would love to go to on a cruise sometime!! I used to live in Trumbull Connecticut back in the late seventies!

Bermuda or Newport? The cruise ships have started cruising into Newport now. I guess they dredged the harbor to accommodate them. That and the fact of letting off a boatload of people on the town. I am pretty sure them locals voted that one down for a while. :)

I wonder how that will change the feel of old Newport. It is such an old monied town. Time will tell. I do miss any aspect of living in Connecticut and Trumbell was one of the towns that call coup on a mall. To this day, there aren't as many fast food or malls as the rest of the world.

:) Have a great day, Diane!

:) I thought so! It is easier to go there from NY and then it parks there for three days as you enjoy going in and out of the ship as you please. I have flown into there and that is amazing also, with a less structured itinerary.

It is one of my favorite islands to go to. :)

Actually, the cruises are a week, but, they take several days to get there and one and a half to get back. Port fees have gone up and there is a lot more on cruise ships than there ever used to be.

Agreed! Some of the places I want to visit - the climate has changed and I am reluctant to go at the moment, so it has really made me stop and reevaluate my reasons.

How sad is that? I was going to Cuba this fall and will change that, but, also Egypt has pushed further ahead.

Le sigh.

Hi Denise. I was looking at the first photo and thought the rock to the far left looked like the head of a large prehistoric dinosaur.
You live in a beautiful place, I can see why you love it there. The shake houses are lovely but as far as the house out on the water goes...it is a great attraction but might cause an wife to leave if she has no way off the rock. 😂
Thanks for posting the poem in it’s entirety. It has such truth written with passion and heartbreaking emotion. ❤️

I agree with you! Does look like a dinosaur!

I no longer live here however it's close enough for me to visit and I do spend some time there because it's a childhood memory. I love the shake houses always line Eastern seaboard and as far as the house on the rock is? A husband and wife who were both Architects bought it and for some reason or other they divorced and so he lives there. Alone. How depressing would that be?

The poem tugs at my heart every time I read it. I want to thank you for stopping by!!

Seems like many beach towns have a cool vibe. Must be what they call "Salt Life". All I know is I feel best when near water!

Seems like a happening small town! A bit of old timey mixed with some new. Not at all bad.

Hey I hear that bubbly calling my name. Pop that top! Those nails are like a real firecracker! Wow talk about a head-turner omg! ;)

0

Oh, seriously! LOL

All beach towns have a vibe of sorts. The northern and southern vibe is different in my opinion. Both a great! I have never found that vibe on a lake, but, they do have a life of their own, I know. I am still more compelled to follow the salt. :)

I knew we could get you addicted if we made you go to the beach once again. You had forgotten how alluring the call of the sea was. Many New England beach towns are a mix of the old and new and the southern beachtowns are more modern. I think that describes how I see them.

Well, seems like you are getting better every day, what with you running off trying to join up the coeds at college again. I am going to have to say that it was probably the messenger bag.

Have an awesome #TrashThursday!

Well, I bit on your bait. Hahaha! 😂 I was thinking, "Denise is on vacation again?!" Hahaha! 😂 But anyhow, the place you took us out for a walk is also beautiful. 😍

The detailed definition of shakes and shingles made me smile. I haven't even encountered these words before how much more use it interchangeably. Hahaha! 😂🤣 Well, two new words for my vocabulary. 😂

Thank you for this educational post, Denise. Have a beautiful day. 💕

Hahaha! I caught one with the clickbait!!! Yes! LOL

But, I will be again soon, although not until mid-October. I have to space them, so they feel like a vacation instead of drifting off into the world, right? :) I grew up with shakes along the seaboard. Most people don't know the difference and when I got to thinking about it, it really doesn't matter, does it?LOL Well, now you know.

Haha! Two more unnecessary words to stick in your vocabulary, right? Well, I hope that you have a most fabulous day! It promises to be amazing!

Well, someday when I get ready to settle down in one place and grow roots, it will most likely be on the eastern seaboard, which is where I am from.

Photo taking journeys will start when I quit work, relying on my independent wealthiness to take care of me. That and my life savings are enough reason for me to stop working. There probably won't be any social security when I try to collect it! :) You know what? I have asked myself this question: How much money does it take me to be happy? I decided not as much as I thought.

Hope you are having an awesome day!

According to a lecture I listened to by Daniel Kahneman, a behavioral psychologist who earned the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Science (2002), $70,000 is the amount needed to be happy (maybe it's $77,000. now). This comes from a twenty years study of 300,000 people (hopefully I'm remembering correctly) and done in big cities...I think it was San Francisco, Chicago and possible New York...anyway three largely populated cities for a family of four. I found it hard to believe but he is a pretty respected guy and the length of the study and the amount of people involved let me allow for the possibility. I will say it cost less at retirement than I thought it would.

What a cool beach town @dswigle. How do you find all of these special places? I love the house on the rock! That would be amazing to live on a rock with water all around, king and queens of the hill I would say. I too hate seeing the old being torn down to be replaced with "new" Old, quaint they all have so many stories to tell us. Those shake shingles are a perfect example :) Thank you for sharing one of your favorite spots!

I must admit I got lost in the story of the house, too. If it were in the middle of nowhere ... on dry land, in the woods or in the desert, it would appeal to me more. Not right out there in the middle of the water though ... stuck out like a sore thumb with boat traffic everywhere. (Sigh.) Thanks ... but I'll pass on that one. (But I like a lot of the pioneering spirit that built it and keeps it going. More power to them!! Can you tell I am not a city-girl? You can? What gave it away??)

0

Yeah, you city girls I'm telling you! That's okay. I don't think that I could live in Narragansett Bay in the middle of all that boat traffic. I'm a pretty flower in person but I have to draw the line in the bay somewhere. Especially when school is out and there are college kids floating all over. Incidentally, husband wife were a team of Architects and so this house was right at the rally but it didn't take misses architect long to ditch mr. Architects and move off the island. In all honesty she probably got voted off. LOL anyway mr. Architect lives alone. I for the life of me could never understand someone who chooses to be alone. Very, very alone.

Thank you for stopping by and leaving your kind words and thoughts! Have a most wonderful day!
