Wednesday Walk: walking to see my cat and neighbours, ไปเยี่ยมแมวและเพื่อนบ้าน

Over the weekend I had a break in the countryside to ground myself and recharge my battery. It was so nice to be able to work in the garden and play with my orange cats. The rain made everything so green and lively; the vibes from the earth were very soothing. Since the rain stopped pouring down, I could go for a walk along the river to visit my neighbours who are now looking after my first stray orange cat.

The river has risen about five meters in rainy season and the colour has become reddish brown. The peaceful surrounding made the walk very blissful and relaxing. The bamboo groves by the river were looking very dense and suitable for many birds’ nests. The noises of hundreds of birds in the evening was always deafening. But in some patches, villagers have started to plant some fruit trees and grow vegetable.

I took a short cut through a dirt road with formerly dense overgrowth which has been leveled down into a muddy road. The owner of this patch and others dared not walk through the thickly overgrown woods for fear of snakes. So, they had someone with big machine to clear the whole stretch. You could see the remaining fallen trees. I was the only one who dared going through the thick woods before it was all leveled down. You have to ask for permission to go through some ‘haunted’ path. I knew local people called it the walk of the death and I occasionally saw offerings of flower garlands on the trees. That used to be a path leading to a very old cemetery which was accidentally discovered several years ago. I reckon there used to be an old city around this area as I could find old bricks which were used as city wall in old cities during Ayutthaya period. I wish I could interview some of the local spirits about the historical background of this area. I could feel that this place is very old and ancient in many ways.

Nowadays when I walked along this lonely path, there was no longer the sense of being followed by some invisible beings. Life has become less exciting. Local people were quite sensitive about local spirits and ghosts here so they preferred not to use this path after dark. I was hoping to make some kind of diplomatic contact so that I could gain more information. But they were put off by my strong scientific attitude! Perhaps I have to be more humble and passive.

A new house has just been completed but the owners were still stuck in America because of the pandemic. The Thai-American couples were hoping to spend their retirement here. I do hope they could come to visit their new house soon.

My goal was the house next door where my first orange cat has been living with my kind neighbours. As soon as I yelled out to the orange cat inside the driveway, she gave out a cry of surprise and ran towards the gate. The owner of the house then opened the gate for me. I and my stray orange cat could be United once more. My neighbours were quite surprised that the cat still recognised my voice and she kept by my side and talked to me in her cat language. I was thrilled to hold my first adopted stray cat again.

สุดสัปดาห์ที่ผ่านมาเราไปเดินเล่นริมแม่น้ำ และแวะไปเยี่ยมแมวส้มที่เราเอามาเลี้ยงตัวแรกเมื่อสามปีก่อน หน้าฝนปีนี้ในตกหนักมากกว่าที่คาดหวังไว้ ทำให้สภาพแวดล้อมดูดีขึ้นมาก นํ้าในแม่น้ำก็กลับมาสูงตามระดับที่ควรจะเป็น แต่นํ้าเป็นสีโคลนนํ้าตาลแดง เพราะฝนเซาะมาจากภูเขาในลาวและตามทางริมแม่น้ำมาตลอดทาง ความอุดมสมบูรณ์กลับมาแล้ว ชาวประมงสามารถออกหาปลาเพื่อเลี้ยงชีพได้ต่อไป ชาวบ้านก็มีน้ำใช้ในการเพาะปลูกอีกครั้ง เราเดินดูแม่นํ้าแลัป่าละเมาะข้างทาง อยากให้ธรรมขาติเป็นอย่างนี้ตลอด แต่เริ่มมีคนมาถางที่เพื่อเพาะปลูกและสร้างบ้าน เราเดินสูดอากาศบริสุทธิ์ด้วยความผ่อนคลาย และดีใจที่มีโอกาสมาอยู่ในสถานที่นี้

เราเดินไปทางลัดที่เคยเป็นป่าละเมาะมาก่อน ที่นี่ไม่ค่อยมีคนกล้าเดินผ่านเพราะ ตอนกลางคืนมีคนเห็นงูใหญ่เลื้อยเข้าไปทางนี้ เราก็เป็นคนเดียวที่กล้าเดินผ่านทะลุที่รกมากไป แต่เราก็ขออนุญาตผ่านทางทุกครั้ง ตอนนี้ป่ารกชัฏกลายเป็นถนนเตียนโล่งให้เราเดินผ่านได้สบายมาก แต่เราอดคิดถึงพวกสัตว์และนกที่เคยทำรังในป่าละเมาะนี้ ชาวบ้านไม่ค่อยกล้ามาทางนี้หลังพระอาทิตย์ตกดินไปแล้ว เขากลัวเจ้าที่เจ้าทางและฝีสางเทวดาแถวนี้ ที่นั่นต้องมีอะไรแน่นอน เพราะเราเห็นดอกไม้และพวงมาลัยแห้งเต็มต้นไม้ เราเชื่อว่าแผ่นดินแถวนั้นเคยเป็นเมืองเก่าในสมัยโบราณ เพราะเราเคยขุดเจออิฐศิลาแลงในบริเวณสวนหลังบ้าน ที่นั่นคงเป็นแหล่งชุมชนที่มีความสัมพันธ์กับทางลาวและอาณาจักรล้านนาเกือบพันปีมาแล้ว มีชาวบ้านเคยขุดเจอสมบัติโบราณในทุ่งนาด้วย เราเดินผ่านบ้านใหม่ที่พึ่งสร้างเสร็จ แต่เจ้าของยังติดอยู่ที่อเมริกา เราก็หวังว่าเขาจะสามารถเดินทางมาเยี่ยมเยือนบ้านใหม่ได้ในปีนี้

เราเดินผ่านบ้านใหม่ไปก็เจอบ้านทรงไทยที่แมวส้มของเรากำลังนั่งเล่นกับเจ้าของบ้าน เราตะโกนเรียกมันทันที และแมวก็รัองด้วยความดีใจวิ่งตรงมาหาเราที่ประตูบ้าน เจ้าของบ้านเปิดประตูให้เราเจ้าบ้านไปคุยเล่นกับแมว เราดีใจมากที่แมวส้มตัวแรกของเรายังจำเราได้ และมันพยายามคุยกับเรานานมาก เพื่อนบ้านก็แปลกใจว่าแมวมีความจำดีมาก เราเล่นกับแมวแล้วถ่ายรูปในสวนของบ้านมาดูเล่น เขาปลูกไม้ดอกและไม้ใบเยอะมาก เราชอบสวนของเขามาก ดูมีระเบียบและสวยงามมาก เราเล่นกับแมวสักพักก็ต้องลากลับบ้าน เพราะเราไม่ได้เอาไฟฉายไปด้วย

I stayed for about an hour and took the opportunity to take some photos of their well looked after garden. The lady owner liked flowers, orchids and foliage. They are now very attached to my orange cat and call her their baby. This orange cat is a very lucky cat.
