A Wistful Wednesday Walk

avatar

Fall always makes me think a bit differently, more feelingly, more deeply. Maybe it's the erratic temperatures. Maybe it's the fall chores to get the house winter-ready. Maybe it's the surprisingly sweet smell of rot in the air. This year though I have another reason to feel wistful as I go for a Wednesday Walk, my first in a couple of months. That reason is I have been unable to, well, walk.

Four different doctors later, and I have four different diagnoses. I eschewed all treatments offered and decided, in the absence of a clear understanding of what was causing me so much pain with every step and all night long as I tried and mostly failed to sleep, to treat the dang thing myself. It's getting better. This post is not about that though, it's about the beauty of fall now that I've managed to get out there and take a few steps around my house.

First up is a thing of such extraordinary colors that I stood there and drank them in for quite some time. There is no color on earth like the color of Fothergilla in its fall glory. I of course do not have the camera skills to capture it properly. I don't even have a camera, and take my pictures with my phone. But if I tip my computer screen a tiny bit away from me, the colors come close to those I was able to immerse myself in and marvel at how such a beauty could be. Try it. Bring out those reds!

There is one bush that rivals Fothergilla in the fall for color, Beautyberry. Again, my pix doesn't begin to capture the luminosity of this color. I hear these can be harvested to make juice and tea. I may just do that and try my hand at Beautyberry Kombucha. We'll see. I tasted one. It had a mild fruity-floral flavor. I wonder why these persist so long into the winter, why the birds don't gobble these up first. Perhaps they know to leave them till last because their sweetness will keep them plump and juicy until well after the first snowfall, so the birds leave the beautyberries and go for the berries that will not be edible much longer instead.

Milkweed fluff and seeds. The butterflies are done with it, and it's sending its seeds out for next year's batch. I just love this stuff and I know my garden fairies do too.

I looked down at my coat after this walk and thought it was beautiful too, so here's a shot.

I nearly forgot to show you what got me out of the house in the first place today! This fellow was on my deck eyeing my chickens. I don't think he or she is mature enough to carry off one of my ladies, but out I went anyway to round up the chooks and get them in the enclosure that has lots of cover to protect them from birds of prey. Again, sorry for the lousy photo! For this one I find it helpful to tip my computer screen towards me.

Thank you so much for coming along on my walk with me. It's lovely to be back.

Why thank you! It's nice to be back, to have the opportunity to notice the stunning sights right outside my door.

Even without tipping my computer the photos still look good, I must admit the tipping make them look even better.

Thank you! I am doing much better, and took a bunch of photos (now that I can do granny squats at least again) just today to get all ready for next week's Wednesday Walk. I love writing and reading them.

I love your photos and am sorry about your limited mobility. Stubborn lady, you are--get the job done, no matter what. I admire that.
That is a bird of prey on your fence? What kind? That's a lovely shot, with the shadow falling on the bushes. Sets a mood.
Hope your legs take you out on a longer walk next Wednesday :)
Be well, and peaceful

Well, I kind of glossed over what kind of bird of prey that is because I do not know. I can tell it's a hawk, and think it's a rather young one because it's so small.
I'm already working on next week's wednesday walk. Pix are downloaded and edited. After all that walking, I had to sit a spell so getting the shots ready has been a nice task I can have my feet elevated to do. My daughter, properly educated in rabid neo-liberal sensibilities as she has been, is sitting here telling me how badly my generation has effed hers up, just as I told my parents before her. It's a little bit funny, this getting old.

It is a small bird, and it looks interested--but it is chubby :) That's good for your chickens.

Steemit is my escape. So many chores I put aside to get "lost" in research and writing. It's safer here than real life. Wish I could get used to photographing. Seems like fun.

Oh yes I am hooked! I love it! Who knew? Not me that's for sure. I felt the same about creative writing and look at me now. The wonders of steem.

So happy you made it out and about AND shared some pictures of those beautiful Fall colors!
I see why they call it Beautyberry - They are such a gorgeous purple!
I think if you have chooks that falcon is a bit too close but they are lovely to see - glad you got your chooks protected!
Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for identifying the falcon! Yeah I went right out to put the ladies into their run.

I don't think I am spelling Beautyberry right. It's an ornamental shrub that will fill a very large spot in a couple of years, can be pruned back pretty far in the spring to show off some spring bulbs, and still give a flamboyant show in the fall. One of my faves. Now I get to eat it too. I don't know of any medicinal uses yet. Callicarpa something.

The Wildflower.org states the medicinal uses as

Use Medicinal: Native American used root and leaf tea in sweat baths for rheumatism, fevers, and malaria. Root tea used for dysentery, stomach aches. Root and berry tea used for colic.

for Callicarpa americana L.
American Beautyberry

Thank you for looking that up. I was being lazy. Interesting source Lady Bird left us.
Fortunately this is one of the few things in my garden the deer DON'T eat. They've razed other things next to them to the ground, but I've never seen any deer damage on the beautyberries.
Malaria? Native Americans battled malaria?

That beautyberry is really lovely!

That hawk might not carry one off, but they sure can kill one! And it just takes seconds...

I love that plant. It sends out graceful arcs of a nice chartreusy green (inconspicuous flowers) all season until it does this. Do you have some? Fills in six foot spaces in two or three years.

No, but I have a lot of new landscaping to do next year, and am looking at a lot of different plants.

Why do you say to upvote your posts that are close to payout? Is there some benefit to this? I've been choosing posts with the largest payout because that maximizes my upvote value now that the curve is in effect, and we both get a tiny fraction of a penny more than we would if I upvoted a low paying post. What say you?

You asked this a while ago, @owasco, and i am just getting back on track after steemfest.

I was asking for this so that I would get the payouts in time to pay my rent.

IN GENERAL - you should vote posts with LOW payouts that will later get more. If you are not in the top 15-20 voters at the time you vote, you will get nothing. Monitor here:

https://steemnow.com/@owasco

Keep track of a few posts you vote on and see what curation reward you get at payout. Also get into the Curation League of @abh12345 and see how you stack up against others. It is a maze for sure now.

Oh wow thank you for that info! I have been trying to figure out why whole days can go by without my receiving anything for curation, when I know I spend hours of every single day upvoting stuff. ugh.

Hi @owasco! Your photos are beautiful. Beautyberry is one of my favorites as well. I adore the color of the berries.
I am here because @agmoore told me to look at this post of yours because of the hawk. I had just posted my first hawk sighting photos and I must say that yours beats mine any day of the week. : )
Good to hear that you can walk now. Stay well! : )

It helps when they are sitting ten feet from you outside your window checking out your chickens. I could not believe I had enough time to get my phone, fumble with it, and still get a shot.
