Wednesday Walk: Homes and Pumpkins

avatar
(Edited)

For my Wednesday Walk, I decided to take a stroll on the Southside of the town where I live. The Southside is part of the historic area of my town.

Many of the homes in this street have pumpkins, mostly to signal trick or treaters that the homes are open to them on Halloween night. It is so unlike the newer neighborhoods like mine, where the exterior of homes are decked with the whole gamut of Halloween decor.

This home, one of the oldest in this town, was built in 1868 by a farmer who moved from Michigan after selling his 320-acre farm near this place. I met the current owners at Church. They've lived here since 1994. The facade and the interior are not in their original condition. They told me that in the 1920s the front windows were expanded on both levels and the front door was moved.

This house received the town's Heritage Home award in 1999.

About 30 pumpkins of various sizes adorn the front steps.

This next home is not as far back in on the property as the first one.

We can get a closer look at the pumpkins that are of different shapes and variety, and some are painted in the style of Jack-a-lantern.

Up next is an Italianate Victorian style home built in 1878.

Pumpkins line the steps, and the front columns of this home are of Doric motif.

This is the only remaining example of a Second Empire style residence with its characteristic Mansard roof house in this town. It was built in 1882. The first owner of this house came west as a miner and later went into farming.

A simple display of pumpkins. Very nice!

A Queen Anne style house that was built in 1890, this house received the town's Heritage Home award in 1990. The house stands virtually as built.

There is just one pumpkin on each side of the house entrance.

Another late version of the Queen Anne style home with elements of Colonial Revival. It is a picturesque home that received the town's Heritage award in 1989.

Again, lots of pumpkins to welcome visitors on Halloween night!

On my next Wednesday Walk, I shall show you some of the homes on the Northside of town!

When I was taking the photos during my walk, I thought of you, especially when I came across the tiny Victorian. I thought that you'd like it! I enjoy going through the Southside and Northside of town. Our downtown too is a bit quaint and covers only 5 short blocks. Thank you for being first to comment on this article, dear @dfinney! Have a wonderful day and take care. Hugs and Kisses 🤗💕💋!!!!

Yes, it is Wednesday again, my friend @summertooth, and it is October! Time sure flies doesn't it. I am glad that you like this area of my town. There are so many beautiful historic homes in this town, being one of the oldest here in Northern California. Have a terrific Wednesday, @summertooth and take care. Tons of 🤗

Yes it is! One of the reasons why I loved San Francisco was the historic homes. Well, I now live in a town filled with them, hehehe! I enjoy walking around this area of town. Our downtown is a thriving old town and is bustling every day. I love it here! Have a beautiful day, and take care. Tons of 🤗

I can relate, @silversaver888, I've always loved San Francisco, for that and many other reasons.

And I loved the historic homes in and around Los Angeles, which were numerous when I was growing up, but many of which have since been razed to make way for "progress." Sigh.

My mom and I were grateful, while living in Santa Monica in the late 70s, that when it was decided to develop the land on which two gorgeous Victorians were designated to make way for new buildings, they were moved across town, rather than demolished.

One became a very nice and stylish restaurant, and I'm not sure what ultimately became of the second, but a friend reassured me that it was at least still standing.

What town are you in now, or at least, what area?

The Queen Annes are magnificent, along with the rest, of course.

Our county was founded in 1802, and so we have a number of historic homes in the area, several of which I would LOVE to get my hands on.

Oh, you mean the horror-comedy! There is a book series too, the same title. Did you like the movie? I'll tell you secret.... I avoid horror films. Hahaha... the houses reminded you of a horror film, hehehe!!!

An area of posh Retro homes in New Westminster is called Queen's Park filled with vintage Heritage designated homes. All commanding 7 figure selling prices. Many over 100 years old and plenty of Victorian and Edwardian character but one has to have deep pockets to afford living there. The Heritage designation comes with very strict conditions upon the home owners requiring detailed scrutiny on any repairs and renovation applications submitted to City Hall. And I hear these residents hand out awesome candy on Halloween too.

Oh my goodness... that is the loveliest mojo ever, @sis @kerrislravehill! I love ❤️ it very much and I am grateful for this gift of moji! It certainly brightens my day, my luv🥰!!!
Yup, these homes are million dollar homes. Next week, I will show you a gable mansion, it is on the next street. Yet, there is this one home that has been passed in from generation to generation which I will share also... and it makes one think about how homes are part of one’s heritage, in contrast to nowadays when the big majority move from one home to another, one city to another, selling and buying homes as real estate market provide equity as houses (land) appreciate.
Have a terrific day, sis! Take care. Luv you much🤗❤️😍🌺🤙

This is the home I referred to earlier, sis @kerrislravenhill. It is located on the opposite block of the Parish Church. My town is small that there is only one Parish Church.
The house sits on the largest lot size in the entire town. I don't know if the owners prefer the "rustic" look of the house interior. It certainly has it's own unique charm. They sure have exotic plants in front... the only one with banana plants. The long-time residents of the town in my parish told me that the house has not transferred ownership and has belonged to the same family forever.

Oh yes... for sure the interior of all these homes is fabulously modern, most specifically the kitchens, although I have just been invited to two of them. Someday, I will get to know the families in this area. I only get to see and meet them during festivals and town activities. When I do get invited again, I will take photos to share with you! Congratulations again on your 70 rep, bestie! I am so proud of you. Lots of Hugs and Kisses 🤗💕💋!!!!

Absolutely love the vintage homes as they bring me to a time when craftsman had to build with their hands and all the little touches meant so much. I have a deep respect for these types of things and the amazing beauty these men brought into being!
Not to mention Halloween and all those pumpkins holding angry spirits at bay. Enjoy the pumpkins but love the pumpkin pie!!! Thanks for sharing a great walk my stacking sister!!

I didn't know that pumpkins keep angry spirits at bay! I'd better get lots of pumpkins to put in my courtyard too, hehehe 😄. @dwingsworld... the workers and craftspeople who built these homes... the tiny details in the roofs that no one from the street level will ever see... you know that they did it with love for their work and offered their work to the heavens . Thanks for making that observation, my stacking brother 🥰. Only you can be that observant🌺. Have a lovely day, take care, and lots of 🤗💕💋!!!!
