Witness Update 2018-07-10 - Steemit now shows top 100 witnesses, Dead Witnesses & Team Vietnam

There had been no drama since the blockchain freeze a week ago. My witness and seed nodes are still up and running and I'm still producing my daily block. It seems that most witnesses have now updated their witness server and are now running steemd v0.19.5, those who have not are still suspended. You can check what version of steemd each witness is running on @drakos' witnesses page, it is the "Ver." column left of the "Price feed" near the end.

Dead Witnesses

Dead Witnesses (inactive witnesses not running a witness server anymore, showing in red in Drakos' witnesses page) are still receiving votes from Steemians who probably either:

  • don't know the witnesses they are voting for has stopped operating, not all dead witnesses have announced that they have stopped producing blocks
  • are too busy to notice
  • don't care
  • do it on purpose


Please note that new witnesses, who have not yet produced a block,
are also shown in red in Drakos' witnesses pages.
After having received enough votes, they will eventually produce a first block
and the page will get updated and will show them as active.

Top 100 witnesses now displayed on the witnesses page

Dead witnesses are like obstacles dropped on the path to witness visibility. Let me explain: the official witnesses page until recently, was showing only the top 50 witnesses when we have 129 active witnesses. Since the update to 0.19.5, that page is now showing the top 100 instead. That is an exciting news for a lot of lower ranked witnesses who were in the shadow and are now receiving the free marketting they deserve.

However, the top 100 ranking also counts dead witnesses. Lets take myself as an example to see how it is affecting me. I'm currently the active witness number 105. Does it mean I only need to climb up 5 more ranks to be publicly displayed to all Steemians? NO... I actually need to climb up 26 ranks because there are 21 dead or temporarily inactive witnesses in front of me. The top 100 ranking is counting inactive and dead witnesses making me the witness number 126! So I'm not only competing with actively contributing witnesses (a lot of whom are awesome Steemians) but I also have to compete with dead ones in order to get seen.

@jerrybanfield has recently announced that he is terminating his witness operation and will not come back "Disabling My Steem Witness = More Earnings + Votes for Other Witnesses". He is still receiving votes from 7,597 Steemians totaling 34,218 MVests of voting power. His top 10 upvoters are: @pumpkin, @hendrikdegrote, @haejin, @roadscape, @glitterfart, @amiramnoam, @xaero1, @done, @czechglobalhosts, @jerrybanfield.

@wackou has stopped producing blocks 2051.7 hours (over 85 days) ago but is still receiving votes from @pumpkin, @freedom, @roadscape, @riverhead, @steemed, @delegate.lafona, @pharesim, @steempty, @done, @slowwalker and over 4 thousands other steemians.

What next?

Steemit Inc. does not want to display more than the 100 top witnesses in the official page because passed that point there are more and more inactive/dead witnesses. Although in my humble opinion, the density is very similar up to the rank #150.

It would be nice if you guys spend some time an double check your witness votes and update accordingly. Especially current witnesses or former witnesses who should know it better.

Maybe @ivoted can also help with a tool or a report that can help Steemians better see if they have voted for dead witnesses?

This new Vietnamese community I've setup is growing and made some good progress. The membership has now climbed up to 123 members. @teamvn is now regularly posting statistics and the moderators are regularly reviewing the upvote list for quality content creation and plagiarism/copy-pasting.

As a new baby witness this sort of information, whilst accurate inhibits new witnesses from being able to build voters, new witnesses that have yet to produce a block also show in red, but this general lack of knowledge among voters about this key fact has an impact on people willing to entrust their vote to you.

The Active Rank column represents the effective ranking of witnesses running HF19.
New witnesses have v0.0.0 and will show up as active once they generate their first block, which will set >their running version.

The amount of times I've had to explain to potential voters, that I am in fact not a inactive witness nor a disabled one, despite what a website says.....is genuinely frustrating.

Very good point and I will update the post. However, as a young witness, you would probably start with a lot of social campaign and people will obviously know you are not dead/inactive. Drakos' page also shows a link to your witness announcement page. The point is that Steemians should do their homework and get to know who they are voting for and get up-to0date once in a while.

Maybe @drakos could add a new color scheme for new witnesses so they don't appear as strike out and red if they are at v0.0.0 and their witness_update was submitted recently? Just an idea...

I think this is about educating users AND how witnesses pages are displayed.

That would be great idea for @drakos to look into, and thank you for the advice, its much appreciated.

I often look at all the disabled accounts and its like a wall of dead bodies you have to kind of climb over to move forwards :)

Not bad at all! I will definitely use this tool regularly.

Now my idea also includes something that kind of pings those who votes for dead witnesses. For example, you check which witnesses are dead, you fetch the top 20 voters, you add that into a weekly/monthly report mentioning them.

The tool you made is very useful, but it requires users to know about it and to think of using it. So it would be nice to have another tool that poke them from time to time.
