“Aurelia, please show Fawn where to get more water,” Sister Naemi instructed between tents. Aurelia nodded and led the mousy-haired maid in the correct direction.

Gemina’s mind remained on Kolt as they went into the next tent. The beautiful body she remembered from the midnight rescue had improved since, especially as he was already responding to the medicine they had given him.

“We have more patients,” Sister Naemi reminded her, leading the way.

“Yes, Sister,” Gemina said, looking at the patients in the next tent, none of whom looked as promising as Kolt.

“We must do our best to save them all.”

“Of course.”

“Kolt asked about a man with long, mousy hair and tan skin. He called the man his brother, though biologically speaking, that must be impossible.”

“Like this one?” Gemina asked seeing the man in the back of the tent. He was unconscious, but she could see he breathed.

Sister Naemi joined her and nodded. “I think you’re right. When we are done attending the patients, you may tell Kolt that his brother is alive. Maybe he will tell you his secret.”

“What?” Gemina asked, confused.

Sister Naemi laughed, giving the brother his antibiotic injection. “Taken with him already?”

“No!” Gemina protested. “That would be impossible.”

“I may be a servant of Vasana, but I do understand human emotions.”

“Have you ever known love?” Gemina asked wistfully.

“Yes. Long ago. I have had children as well,” Sister Naemi replied, taking the man’s pulse and blood pressure. “They grew up and sailed away. I went with them for awhile, but grew old and dedicated my crone years to Vasana.”

“You can’t be so old as that!”

Sister Naemi chuckled. “I know more than you give me credit for, m’lady.”

Gemina felt her cheeks growing warm. “I didn’t mean to imply...”

The sister laughed again, moving on to the next patient. “I know, Gemina. Stella taught us the spells years ago, so we do not age like you do.”

“I would learn!” Gemina cried impulsively.

“In time. Your path lies somewhere near that young man you’ve been dreaming of all morning – but after we bring him, his brother, and most of the other sailors back to full health.”

Now, Gemina’s cheeks burned fiercely.

“I think you need to brush up on your Old Velantian a bit,” Sister Naemi said with a wink. “But I daresay Kolt will be more than happy to tutor you in the subject!”

“Sister! You shouldn’t tease!”

“Who’s teasing?” she asked, looking over the patient in front of her and giving him an injection. “The niece of the King deserves happiness! Same as his nephew… and his daughter.” Sister Naemi looked at the door where Aurelia had just come back in.

“You’re talking about me again?” the strawberry-blonde asked as she returned to the tent.

“Just that you should be happy.”

“I am!” Aurelia insisted.

“Then you wouldn’t know anything about being dragged back from the pub the other night, right?”

“I will have your tongue cut from your mouth!” Aurelia threatened.

Gemina knew her cousin wasn’t serious with her threat, but she didn’t know how Sister Naemi had learned of the embarrassment.

Aurelia looked at Sister Naemi, perhaps unsure how to handle the woman who smiled too much for her cousin’s taste. Then she rolled her eyes and led the way to the next tent.

Gemina laughed as she followed with Sister Naemi.

“When she falls, she’s going to fall hard,” the sister remarked.

Gemina nodded conspiratorially.

Adrick ran up to them just as they were about to go into the next tent. “Where are the guards?” he demanded, his voice slightly muffled by his mask.

“Lying in patient’s tents,” she informed him.

“That would be because they are all patients now – everyone who helped with the rescue the night before last,” Doc informed as he joined them. “I blame myself, Your Highness! If I had brought more masks...”

“We did not know. We were just trying to save lives,” Adrick replied, shaking his head.

“In doing so, we may have forfeited more. At least the children are safe,” Doc replied. “They have the medicine just in case. Enough for the whole convent, I believe.”

Adrick nodded. “I hope it is enough to save the kingdom!”

“Agreed, your highness,” Doc replied, looking stressed. “I would like to see the new patients. You may accompany if you wish, of course.”

Adrick looked at his sister. “Aurelia. You still refuse to leave Erion?”

“Will you leave too?” she asked.

“No. I will serve my people.”

“As will I.”

“And I,” Gemina insisted.

Adrick nodded. “At least be careful. I don’t want to lose either of you!” He gave them each a hug that belied the stress he was under.

“We will save them,” Gemina said, hoping it would be true.

Adrick nodded again, his masked expression grave. “How soon will the rest of your medication arrive, Doc?”

“How long does a courier take to ride from Castel Velantia to here?”

“A good three to four days,” Adrick replied glumly.

“You have your answer. The courier left yesterday.”

“Do you have enough to treat everyone?”

“Depends on whether the Plague spreads any further.”

Adrick rubbed his hand across his brow and through his ruddy hair. “What about Stella?” he asked.

“Emergencies only, she said,” Doc replied.

“Isn’t this?”

“Not yet.”

“And then it takes her three to four days to get here – probably longer.”

“She’ll have my hide if she is disturbed for nothing.”

“And I’ll have your hide if the delay costs the lives of people I love,” Adrick impressed.

“Your highness, if I have seen no signs of improvement by tonight, I will contact Stella,” Doc promised.

Adrick nodded and left them to their tasks.

Aurelia went with Doc while Gemina and Fawn accompanied Sister Naemi into the next tent.
