My Favorite Binge Watch Series - A Contest By @yourtop3

avatar

This is my selection for this month's @yourtop3 contest: 'What Are Your 3 Favourite TV Box Sets/ Binge Watch Series?'

I never watched a lot of TV. I spent a big part of my live watching movies, but series have never really been my cup of tea.

That completely changed about 2 years ago. Right after my first back surgery, we decided to get a Netflix account, so it would only take me a push of a button to escape from reality for a while.

I started out exploring my favorite genre: horror. Next to some awesome movies, I found series like Hemlock Grove and Penny Dreadful, which I really loved. I guess those two triggered my love for series.

Since my girlfriend doesn't appreciate horror at all, I'm stuck watching other genres most of the time. I'm kinda glad she broadened my horizon; if it hadn't been for her, I would still be watching only horror.

I have binge watched dozens of series during these last two years, and it was definitely not easy to pick just 3. Series like Orphan Black, The 100, Stranger Things, The OA, Pose, Ozark, Undercover, ... They all belong in my top 10.

The ones listed below do stand out for me, though. I have watched all three at least three times, and often started again with episode one right after the last episode had finished.

Here we go:

#1 Prison Break

I remember vaguely that I watched the first season of Prison Break when it was broadcasted on TV here 15 years ago. Only vaguely, so I guess that means I wasn't such a big fan.

When my girlfriend started watching it on Netflix 2 years ago, I wasn't interested at all. She binge watched the entire series while I spent that time on my laptop. After watching all 4 seasons (season 5 had yet to be released on Netflix Belgium at that time) she had become... I guess 'obsessed' is the right word, lol.

I didn't really get what the fuss was all about, but I was happy to spend more time on Steem and Discord while she watched the series a second time.

I don't know how or why, but by the end of the second season, I found myself keeping one eye on the screen of the laptop, and the other eye on the TV screen. So I gave in and started watching season 3 together with her.

It didn't take long before I was just as obsessed as she was. Heck, I even got a teenage-like crush on Wentworth Miller. 🤣

After finishing season 3 and 4, I really wanted to know the entire story, so we started at season 1 once again. Of course we didn't stop after season 3, 😁

Not much later, Netflix added season 5. Instead of just watching the new season, we started from season 1 again.

I just love the characters, the storylines, the suspense... it all just fits together. And then there's Wentworth, of course 💜

There's still a lot of contradicting news about whether there will be a season 6 or not, but we're keeping our fingers crossed. We saw a teaser yesterday, and our interest spiked again. Once we have finished the last few episodes of the pretty disappointing 'GLOW', we'll be meeting with Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell again. I can hardly wait.

#2 Orange Is The New Black

Probably one of the most hyped Netflix series, but it doesn't disappoint. We were sold right from the start.

There are so many different story lines, and each character is so unique it's hard to not feel involved. Imo, the show has it all: drama, comedy, suspense... it's often an emotional roller coaster.

One of the things I really like about the show is the fact that it implements real life issues in society, and is not afraid to have critique on what's happening in the real world.

In general, it takes us about 2 or 3 days to get through a season, lol. We watched it 3 times already, and it's high time for a rerun. Maybe after we've finished prison break next week. 😁

#3 Lucifer

Lucifer is definitely a series that was out of both our comfort zones. It's completely different from my previous 2 choices, but I had so much fun watching it (3 times in a row 🤣).

Every 2 months or so, we ask around if peoplke can recommend us some good Netflix series. At one point, a friend told us to watch Lucifer. Good girls like we are, we did. 😁

I remember watching that first episode; the main character gets stopped by the cops and uses his 'mojo' to get out of a ticket. We looked at each other and were like: this is not going to be a success. Somehow we did make it through the first 3 episodes without actually liking them. Glad we didn't give up, though.

I suspect we had expected a regular advisor-helps-police kinda series, so we didn't really saw the humor in that very first scene. We mistakenly took the main character's attitude for overacting at that point. It took us a while to get in the flow, but once we got there, there was no stopping us.

I love how Tom Ellis portraits the Lucifer Morningstar character. He's both funny and sad, both adorable and annoying. I don't really know what to say about the series, except that it's... different.

So, that was my Top 3 for this month.
Feel free to join in on the fun. There are some nice prizes to win!
You can read everything about this month's @yourtop3 contest in the official contest post here.

Also, keep an eye out for the dpoll that will be launched in about 10 to 12 days, and make sure you select your favorite binge watche series, while picking this month's winner.

I loved Prision Break gosh when it came out it was blind blowing, T Bag is still my favourite, I was even sold all those years later on watching that final season, wasn't the best but decent enough send-off for the story.

Never watched the other 2, but I've been told by 3 people that Lucifer is worth checking out

I love T-bag. The guy does an amazing job playing that character.

watching that final season

I assume you refer to SE4, where Michael dies at the end???
7 years later, they made a SE5, so that was not the final one 😉

I can see you, now let's see if you can see my comment, haha. Woohoo to another great entry for the month! I have seen parts of the first and second season of Prison Break, but didn't realize it had that many seasons. Wentworth is definitely crush-worthy, so might just have to pick that up again myself. I also watched a few episodes of Orange, but again not the whole series. We did a Tough Mudder race right around the time it was really being hyped up, though, and we made custom shirts saying "Mud is the new black." I know, a bit cheesy, but still shows what a popular show that was. Haven't caught Lucifer yet. Sounds like it might be worthy of adding to the ever growing list. Maybe one day I'll get to all of them...

sometimes it feels like the list is neverending, right? But then we finish another series, and have no clue what to watch next. So, sometimes we pick something completely random. That can be successful (Pose, for example, was awesome) or really disappointing (GLOW wasn't really that good)

Wentworth is definitely crush-worthy

You bet he is 😂

Haha, I might also have a little of a thing for Cillian Murphy from Peaky Blinders. It's definitely the eyes....

HAHAHAHA I love your Prison Break story, can see you slowly but surely getting lured in and then become obsessed by it - to be fair it is a great series!

I've not seen Orange is the New Black but I don't have Netflix although after seeing the trailer for Lucifer... I might have to get it! Damn these subscription services haha!

Thanks for entering the contest again this month - good luck!

OMG! I have seen, but not seen some of these. We've really got out of keeping up with the new series. And, I confess, I don't like stuff that's really violent so what little I saw of Prison Break, didn't do it for me.

Oh, and you are so right about persevering beyond the first two episodes of series: sometimes you need to give them time to set up the characters and atmosphere.

I guess, even though we don't have Netflix, I should keep an eye out for these.

Great TV shows and I've seen those from your top and are pretty cool. TV shows are much better than one time movies, they simply keep the narative better.

I've only seen parts of Orange is the New Black. Dude that I live with watches it and after a few episodes here and there, I can't watch it anymore. I'm really picky with what I watch lol. I thought I would get into Lucifer, but I couldn't get into it.
I dunno, maybe my brain just takes me to places that are more dark than what I see in the series lol.

Hey @simplymike

Great post. Penny Dreadful was awesome. It was pretty dark, grim and graphic but it had real quality about it. Eva Green is top notch. The OA was really cool too. Something a little different. It's shows like these that normally get cancelled because they don't appeal to the masses. I loved both.

I've never watched Prison Break but my cousin is absolutely bonkers about it and is always trying to get me to watch it. I may give in one day.

Lucifer and Orange is... Are great. I've enjoyed both. Crazy eyes is awesome.

Good luck.

I must admit that I think Penny Dreadful and The OA are way more quality shows than for example Lucifer. But since I only watched them once, they didn't really qualify 😂
